Well it sounded like a good idea.

I have a neighbor who is on disability for being "MENTALLY UNSTABLE." His mother died and left him a ton of money. He owns, bought from Armslist and local sellers, 40-50 AK's, AR's, and a FN FAL with a selector switch. He has gotten in fights with dozens of neighbors and recently pulled a gun on a 85 year old disabled man.

I contacted the ATF 2 weeks ago but a PROVEN unstable, violent man with enough to equip a Marine Platoon. NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They never bothered to call back, info left on answering machine.

I have a year unlimited shooting pass at a indoor range and offered to bring him along. He PANICKED and said he was afraid of ANYONE knowing what he has.

Forget it or call the FBI?

Thanks,
Luger

p.s. he is NOT a friend. Just a neighbor.

....I contacted the ATF 2 weeks ago ....

ATF is a federal agency which is primarily responsible for enforcing certain, specific federal laws, including federal firearms laws.

But it doesn't sound like your neighbor has violated any federal firearms laws, unless the FN FAL with a selector switch you mentioned is actually select fire and has not been registered under the NFA. There's no federal law against a mentally unstable person possessing firearms unless he has been, "...adjudicated as a mental defective or .... committed to a mental institution" or unless he is in some other prohibited class (e. g., convicted felon, convicted of a crime of domestic violence, subject to a domestic restraining order, etc.).

....call the FBI?....

The FBI investigates federal crimes and enforces federal, criminal law. It doesn't look like your neighbor has violated any federal laws. He apparently committed an assault with a deadly weapon, but there's no federal law against that.

This looks like a matter for your local police or sheriff. Was he charged in connection with pulling the gun on the old man? Has anyone who he's gotten into a fight with reported the incident?

Keep in mind like the rest of us we can only use one at time, I don't mind at all how many he owns. Too bad the 85 year old disabled guy didn't file charges with local PD, the issue may have been resolved. ^^^^ What Frank said.

Be very careful here. Put the shoe on the other foot. Any one of us could be reported by a nosy neighbor as being allegedly "mentally unstable." Personally, I'd like to have the protection of due process.
He PANICKED and said he was afraid of ANYONE knowing what he has.
Something doesn't add up. He's secretive about what he has, and yet you know that he has 40-50 AR's, etc.

There are surplus FN FAL's with selector switches that rotate to all three positions that don't function as a full auto..... As far as the number of guns he has, like Shimitup said, it really is irrelevant, it's not against the law to have a lot of guns......

I agree... Good Questions....

Obviously, we are not as familiar with the situation as you are. I think I would talk to the elderly man he allegedly pulled the gun on (did you witness this?) and find out more details, like if a report was filed and if the situation has been resolved. I agree that some of the things you mentioned sound troubling but I would be very careful not to stir the pot with your neighbor more then is necessary until you have more information or unless you are directly involved...... or witness something illegal....

Tell them he's a Trump supporter. That'll get the FBI moving.

Ok, joking aside, where did the report come from of him "pulling a gun on an 85 year old disabled man"?

No need to call the FBI; call your local Sheriff. Here, in FL, we have a law where someone can be "Baker Acted", which is involuntary protective custody. Maybe where you live there is something similar?

^^^This. If you witnessed it or it was witnessed by others, it should already have been reported to the local authorities. As far as the ATF listening to you, how many calls a day from antis about their "Crazy neighbor with an armory's worth of guns" do you think they get? Again, go to the local authorities first........if there really is a legitimate threat. Lots of folks, that are not "mentally unstable", that don't want others to know what and how many firearms they have. If this guy is really "just a neighbor", how do you know so much about his personal life, finances and firearms? If his book is that open, and he is acting that irresponsibly and illegally, I'd assume other neighbors are concerned as well?

Maybe liberals would be interested in helping you. How about emailing the local news stations with this guy's information?

Forming a vigilante committee of liberal gun haters does not sound like a good idea. Not at all good.

OP should contact local law enforcement

Encourage those who have firsthand knowledge of any "disqualifying behavior" experiences or patterns to report them to local law enforcement.

Who was it that told you that the reason he gets a disability benefit is specifically that he has been adjudicated as "mentally unstable"? Remember that not all "mental illness" is "unstable."

If I knew someone that I truly believed was a "proven, unstable, violent man" who "is NOT a friend, just a neighbor", I certainly wouldn't be offering to take him to a firing range. Remember where that got Chris Kyle.

A TV reporter isn't a vigilante committee. They have a history of getting attention from the government when the rest of us can't.

I think Frank laid it out just right.

If you're really worried, go have a sit down with your local LEO, and just ask what you ought to do. The probable answer is, nothing unless he was involuntarily committed at some time. Law enforcement deals with people who break the law. If he hasn't broken the law, he has a right to be left alone.

I was distantly acquainted with a fellow in BC who had been involuntarily committed for a long period. When he was able to go home, if anyone challenged his mental state he would tell them that when he was released, he got a doctor's certificate saying he was OK. And then he'd ask, do you have a certificate?

I have a very unstable soon to be ex SIL. Trying to understand his situation, I spent some time with a friend with many years of law enforcement experience. He sort of smiled, and allowed that the system was already full to overflowing, and there were people a lot more crazy that my SIL who were deemed alright to have on the streets, for lack of room.

Sticky wicket.

Are you leaving yourself open to some sort of defamation?

Mr. Attorney - “so mr. Luger fan, how is it exactly that you became a mental health expert?”

I understand your good intentions, but I would feel more comfortable with some qualified backup or support.

The OP offered to take a "proven unstable" , heavily armed man , - "NOT a friend" - to the shooting range? (What's wrong with this picture?)
Siccing the liberal - and probably gun hating - media onto a person rather than asking the local police to look into the matter is a good idea? (How would you like it if a team of camera toting libs showed up at your door demanding to know why you have guns ...)

Man , this thread is chock full of weirdness.

First, avoid this person.

Second, if you see him break a law, report it to local law enforcement. Forget about the matter with the 85 year old neighbor unless you witnessed it. If you did, you could report the event, but you won't get far without a cooperative victim. IMO, either the victim will report the crime or he won't, and getting in the middle of things isn't necessarily a good idea. If there's a repeat, and you see it with your own eyes, report it as it is happening.

I tend to mind my own business when dealing with my neighbors. If I have a problem I call the sheriff. We don't have any ordnance here against shooting on private property and I hear my neighbors shooting occasionally. I've had the sheriff knock on my door a time or two to ask if I was shooting on my property. Well, no, but good luck finding the person doing the shooting because I hear it almost every week from two or three different directions.

I live in a place that has some outliers. If I don't care to associate with them I just don't talk to them. I have one neighbor who I don't care for. Only had one problem with the guy when he moved in. I told him to stay off of my property and we wouldn't have any more problems. Fifteen years later we haven't said three words to each other so I guess that works.

Personally, I don't care what firearms my neighbor owns and neither should you. Leave that to local LE. They know a lot more than you do about your neighbor. If he's a prohibited person they know that. If he causes you a problem call the cops. Short of that leave the guy alone and mind your own business.
