Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
So there you are all sound asleep warm and cozy. You know that "sound" you didn't hear, but heard? We have all not "heard" a sound like that.

For many many years I have kept and used a clearing bucket. 4 rules always observed and a clearing bucket just made sense. Now nothing fancy, just a 5 gallon bucket that some type of bakery thingy came in, frosting, flour , I dunno...it's light gray. On bottom was on old heavy canvas bag with chilled shot, sand, another bag of shot, more sand, another bag, more sand another bag more sand to top, snap lid on. Just happened upon old canvas bank bags and bought a bucket of spilled shot of various sizes from and guy whom went through a flood, dunno why I bought it as the time, but shot is shot -right? Hey the bucket alone was worth the $5.

Ok at one time being a guy and all I was told I needed to "spruce" up my "bucket". Hey I like green and gray, it matches...I even took the dumb white label off so as to not "clash"...I thought I did good.

Oh no, seems like the "decorator police" had taken my suggestion and her clearing bucket was a heavy brass pot big enough to bury a VW Beetle in. Fake...excuse me SILK plant with that mossy looking stuff and a "Replica" of a snake. Well it had a bird, cat confiscated the bird, now the cat won't get within 5 feet of the whole dealie because of snake.

Lesson: Never teach a classmate how to shoot , and assist with CCW and then invite her and other classmates over for a study session before final exams...don't do it!

OH no, we have to "buy material". Huh? Wait a minute , I go to fabric stores to buy beeswax, scraps for patches, foam for gun cases, machine oil in bottles with needle dispensers. I might have bought thread, buttons or replacement pockets...that's acceptable for a guy. It is ok for a guy to go with a wife, to get material too...cause I needed foam , that's different. I mean the ex wife never complained, and she had great taste in decorating. "This gonna bug you" I asked the wifey. " Heck no, its a friggin clearing bucket, besides it has character and matches your fishing rods on the wall". See?

Oh no we have to have "material" to "accent" green and gray and my decor. Huh? I'm divorced, what the hell goes with a 1911 mag or K frame speed loaders...light gray bucket works. It doesn't show dust, I even put it on one of those dealies with castor wheels like big plants and stuff are put onto so I could <grunt> move it around. Hey with an Aloe Vera plant on top It goes with an 870 and I'm "decorated" - right? Yeah I thought so too.

That "noise I didn't hear"? Poor "properly decorated accented clearing bucket" plum tuckered out. Two castors are splayed in opposite directions third one is leaning and the forth is like " he he I'm the winner". I have sand ( what my foot said it felt like) mixed with shot on sand colored carpet. This "investigation" is gonna require coffee, a cigarette, and my bif-focals probably wouldn't hurt.

Armed with shoes and a honey bun ( the brain needs fuel to think ya know) , I "ease " around as to not disturb this... this ...well whatever it is ...plus the Aloe Vera plant is reaching out for desperate assistance. Aloe Vera really looks pitiful without dirt and a pot. Kinda like walking in on someone in the bathroom...older...that one does only once and they learn to knock...even when home alone, they knock first, you might touch a hot stove more than once...you don't enter a bathroom but once without knocking ever again.

So with the Aloe Vera safe and sound I go back to the "investigation" with another Honey bun in hand...hey, had to pick up honey bun to put down plant, gotta put honey bun somewhere, besides my brain could use all the help it can get.

So I 'ease" back the material...this stuff is more expensive than a good steak...whut whoa...Houston we have a problem. Seems as if I have mulitple stress cracks...ok there is a "little bit" of gray and a BUNCH of cracks, the bottom is in at least 5 pcs ( hold on let me finish honey bun..six...seven) Seven pcs and where we don't have " stress cracks" per se' we have chunks of the side missing. I deduct the high dollar "properly accented" material was holding the insides best can. Sand and Shot emitted forth like lava...I discovered I still do a pretty good "back scoot on the butt" when need to, even on carpet...I was trained on wood floors tho'.

< sound of sand /shot spilling, me scooting, plastic giving way, expletives, phone rings and telemarker " I'm surprised you haven't returned my call you won a vacation to a small island with sandy beaches, and you haven't returned my earlier call with the password "Mr Murphy""...bleeep...[sand I got, thanks anyway I grumble]. >

So I retreive a plain white 5 gallon bucket...it's a guy thing...we do buckets, besides my two Behrens galvanized buckets have important stuff like shotshells, hulls, 45 ACP and 9mm cartridges and brass...need to sort that some day, just easier to pick through it , get what I want...eventually I'll shoot the good stuff and the empties will be left...makes sense to me. Hey work smarter not harder, I like simple...why sort it, when picking and shooting sorts it. Women think we are wired funny, nope we see past the tunnel and past the light at the end that's all.

Armed with a small coffee can I work on the ....Hey that looks like Teddy Roosevelt...humm, go get a bigger coffee can...that's better...Use Enough, well you know. Even heavy canvas rots after a bit...lets see 2003- 1984...who has a calc handy? So one bag of shot I'm guessing 10 # here is mixed with sand. G-e-n-t-l-y I use a S.W.A T. magazine to get under the other 3 bags and put into another 5 gal bucket. Hey Denny, tell Rich or whomever the magazine is great , could use a bit more heft in the lifting of sand bag department tho'...yeah I figure it is not priority...just you guys said "input was welcome"...I "inputed".

So I have "most " of the stuff in a stark white bucket, tin pie plate atop sand, don't have a lid for this bucket, but the Aloe Vera looks fine. I turn around and see my vacuum cleaner head accross the room and lock itself in a closet. I never knew that closet had a interior lock. Wait...under the door the vacuum slips me a note.

"Maybe the Kirby Vacuum guy will come by and offer a free demonstration? ".

The way you were talking about sounds you do/don't hear and the fact you were talking about you're clearing bucket made me think you were telling us about a ND. I'm glad that's not the case, but it sounds like you've a nice mess to clean up.

Mal H: I had good training , you always fall back to...:D

Allright, it's a given, I can't tell a joke...or story. Lawdog I'm not, my experience was to shed a little humor and a Safety Suggestion. I have pretty good hearing and sleep light.

I rec'd some PM's and was asked was a "clearing bucket" was. These folks felt bad about asking a "dumb question"...there are no dumb questions, especially when it regards firearms, firearm safety and responsibility. So for the new folks here you go....who, what, when, where and why of a clearing bucket.

Clearing Bucket : I have seen these on LEO, Military,gunshops/gunsmiths and various ranges beginnning as a kid. Basically a large bucket filled with sand and other media so when you clear, unload, make ready, load up you, whatever...you have a safe direction for the bullet to enter.

Yes I know 4 rules, I practice them. So why a clearing bucket if one practices 4 rules? What if a customer brings in a gun he has "smithed" you drop the mag, rack the slide and 'bang'...better to have a measure of safety when primer hits ejector and shoot the bucket than the floor. New folks until trigger finger is trained is a good idea...even Louis Awerbuck spoke of how after many years trigger fingers end up in trigger guards, by trained persons. I figure he knows a thing or two.

Where is a safe direction in your home or apt, when you choose to carry a different semi for CCW and load up? What if you're dry firing that revolver and get distracted , and the bullet gremlins loads your gun...what do you aim at when dry firing,..the TV? What is past the TV? What if you miss the BG on TV...is it the children's bedroom on the other side?

I have had friends come over or at my gunsmith's to have a gun looked at, maybe just to admire, admire new grips, left for repair. I use a cleaing bucket, my gunsmith can step outside, but keeps a clearing bucket inside just as well. I visit friends and they have them also.

4 rules always, Safety always, a little extra measure never hurts, some use heavy furniture, some can step outside, I use the clearing bucket. I do the same thing the same way each time, just trained myself to do so.

HTH

I knew what you were talking about when you mentioned a Clearing bucket, and I aint even an SP.

We have some around the different Squadrons that have weapons on premises.

Tis a good idea for home use as well.
