Well, Which 357 Magnum??
I am looking into two very different 357's

Cimarron Thunderer 3.5" Blued, Single action, I think they are very endearing, cute even. . .I would carry this gun

Taurus 608 6.5" SS, I know its a Taurus, but seems stout and its the same $$ as the Cimarron. . .I would hunt with this gun

Any advise from actual owners/shooters is always appreciated

Based on my experience with my Taurus 650 SS, I'd easily grab the Taurus out of this pair. I just can't imagine a SA (YMWV, obviously) as a carry piece and my 650 has been excellent for me.

Are you familiar enough with it to use a single-action as a SD gun?

If so, then by all means, choose the Thunderer. It'll do anything that any other five-shooter will do before you need a reload, if you know how to handle it. ( I believe the Thunderer is a true Colt SAA clone, and therefore should be carried hammer down on an empty chamber. I could be wrong, however.)

Were it me though, I'd go with one of the short barreled Ruger Vaqueros instead of the Cimarron, just so I could safely carry it with six loaded chambers.

On the other hand, if you haven't spent much time with the old "thumb busters", you'll be much better served with the DA Taurus.

P.S. I haven't owned a Cimarron, but I have owned Uberti single-actions ( I believe they make the Thunderer for Cimarron ), and quite a few Taurus .357s. All have been accurate, reliable guns.

I cut my teeth shooting SA revolvers as a youngster, and fairly commonly shoot pigeons at my Fathers farm with his Vaquero in 44 mag
So yes I do like to think I am familiar enough with a SA mechanism to use it to defend myself.

my 608 is the best shooting handgun I own by far... granted, it isnt a stock 608, the platform lends itself to awesome custom work and is a hell of a gun in its factory form. Obviously it is my choice.

the short barrel will be too loud. Taurus handguns are sweet so I recommend the taurus.

Not to sway my own thread but. .

I almost promise the ported Taurus will give the shooter more blast than the 3.5" Thunderer, I used to own a ported 454 SRH, key word, Used

Gun was wildly accurate but too loud and really more horsepower than I needed for NW Ohio whitetail
