Went to my first pistol match today... a humbling experience.

I don't remember my first match, but it was probably a bowling pin match. I do remember the most valuable lesson I learned from shooting in competition: no matter how much I plinked and shot on my own, I would never get as good as I could get through competition.

My comp shooting is SASS shooting(cowboy guns) and my first match was five years ago.And seems like yesterday.boy, was I ever nerveous!! I just knew I'd shoot my toe off,or at least drop a gun.
99.99 percent of comp shooters go out of their way to make a fella feel right at home, and offer him or her all the help they want.If my rifle breaks down at a shoot,I'll have five offered to me in the blink of an eye.Ya can't ask for more than that.
the first match is a booger, but after that grin gets plastered on your face, your hooked.!!
I'm a 'middle of the pack' shooter at most matches, and th'sat good enogh for me.ringing the steel is the thing for me.That, and playing cowboy with real bullets.:)

First match?

My first match was A Waaaaays back, a bowling pin match at a local indoor range that is now a lawnmower dealership. I got spanked, not sure how I compared with everyone else, but something caught on and I have been into competition ever since.
Glad you had a good time. The day was great, not to cold with no wind at all. Not bad for December in Utah. Lots of shooters in attendance. I never got a chance to meet you there, but if you get the bug and continue to come out to the shoots, I will... Remember the 3 gun match scheduled Jan 1 2005 It promises to be a real blast!! (pun).

Hey Corey,

Yeah, I hope to be at the 3-gun on the 1st... the problem is that I don't have a rifle. My buddy (Mr Hanky) has an AR, so if we end up in the same group and I buy him some donuts, maybe he'll let me use it... :p

My fingers are crossed.

Wes

Wes, The great thing about this club, www.udpl.net is the great bunch of folks that particapate in the matches. I have never witnessed a person who lacked equipment, (or ammo) show up who was not able to compete. Plenty of offers to assist, share equipment, and as always, offer advice. So, bring a buddy (or two), and have a great time. Don't worry about competing, dress warm, and enjoy the day. Having already shot one match, you will have the edge on the first timers who show up Jan 1!. Happy holidays :) ..... Corey

Wes,

Corey is right on. UDPL is good folks.

I'll be there on Jan. 1, and I usually SO one of the squads. I always have a 'spare' rifle and gear. Come out and try the 3-gun match.

Sorry I missed you guys. I got stuck babysitting on Saturday.

Like Corey and Homer say, just come, we'll hook you up with equipment if neccesary.

See you on the 1st.

My first match was an IDPA match at Jim Watson's club. It went ok until the last stage when my LE refurb G17 started malf'ing due to an old mag spring. Ever since then though, I have been hooked.

I shoot regularly at the same club and had plans to actually join IDPA and start shooting at more local matches until every single mechanical device I own (except my guns) started tearing up and costing me money. I can only hope that the new year will bring me better luck with my vehicles and house...lol.

I dunno Larry, babysitting sounds like a excuse. Just bring them young uns to the FARM and have them be your ammo - gun bearers. Bribe them with a refined sugar product and enjoy the day! :)
