In a constant state of confusion.
Greetings all,
The guys I work with took me Varmint shooting yesterday and I am hooked. I used their rifles which were 17 Mach II single shots. What a blast. So, now after that wildly fun adventure, I want to get into the sport as well.
I am interested in the Malrin bolt action rifle and a 4 by 12 scope. My question is, is the Marlin the way to go or should I pick up another rifle? What are your guys thoughts on another rifle? If not the Marlin, which one?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

I have a marlin 917vss in 17hmr and I love it its accurate and looks sweet to. Also I would recmmend getting a 17hmr. Ammo is $2 more a box but they pack a little more punch.

I gotta agree with the others...I'd stick to the 17HMR over the MachII. More choices in rifles. I have the Savage 9317 in regularSS and HB Stainless/synth. Both kill yotes out to about 90yds. Gophers to about 130yds. I think the HMR is the better choice.

Kali, you might also look into the Savage bolt guns. The heavy barrels are some tackdrivers, and with the new Accu-Trigger system, you can get a pretty sweet trigger from the factory. You can even tune them lighter by removing half a coil from the spring and lightly stoning the contact surfaces. Best part of all, they're quite inexpensive!

Kali ~ I have an early model Marlin in 17HMR; it took 2 guys to pull the factory trigger, but I've heard the triggers now are much improved. I put an after-market adjustable trigger from Midway in it, & it is now very accurate. This rifle sports a Tasco 4-10 mil-dot Varminter scope. I also like the BSA 3-10 "Sweet 17" scope I mounted on a Thompson TC carbine 17HMR barrel. The scope does work. Of the 2 rifles, I prefer the TC because I can take multiple barrel combinations on shooting trips, but both are equally accurate. Personally, I believe the 17HMR is not enough gun for coyotes; heard of too many that have run-off after body hits. When I hunt 'yotes, I use a centerfire, usually in .223 or .204 Ruger.

I am interested in the Marlin 917m2. I won't be shooting anything larger than ground squrels(sp). I have accelerators for larger varmint and I'm building up an AR15 varmint rifle. The rifle I'm interested in is on sale for $220 at the local store.
Thanks for all your input,
Jon

Marlin 22Mag is all I have to say. I've shot many Groundhogs with it and had much success. I've got up to 50 groundhogs in one summer with it one time.. I've shot them out to 200yrds with it as well. I probably wouldnt shoot one any farther though...
