western movie remakes

Except that the "New" Rooster wears a right eye patch and shoots his rifle right handed!
Otherwise it was GREAT!
I'd like to see some new westerns if they can;t remake the oldies.
I love Westerns! I keep buying those multiple Spagetti Western Packs but how bout those richoet discharges?
I'd like to see a continuation of Josie Wells. What happened after they settled in?

ZVP,
There is a second book/story to Josie Wales. I have it somewhere but it's late here. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow..?

Found it, the book we all know from the movie is Gone To Texas and the second book is The Vengeance Trail Of Josie Wales.
The author was Forrest Carter and my copy is from the University of New Mexico Press.

Definitely!!! Some of the older westerns need to be brought up to date but make them more historically correct. But something I don't think Hollywood is up to even though the remake of 'True Grit' was a financial success.

The only thing that burns me about the remake was I still don't know why Rooster Cogburn used a Colt SAA throughout the movie when he had 2 perfectly good '51 Colt Navys holstered on his saddle. :cuss:

in my humble opinion 3;10 to Yuma was very well done (my favorite bad guy , the guy in the white leather jacket)and I was truly expecting epic fail with john waynes best "true grit" lets have clint eastwood direct (or coen bros) good bad and ugly 2015 ?

On the other hand, why redo the same stories?
New ones would be fresher, wouldn't they?
Or at least new stories with familiar characters.
How about new versions of "Wanted Dead or Alive?"
Not repeats of original yarns, but new stories, from scratch, like a continuation of the series.
Who wouldn't want to see the chopped off Winchester back in action.
But with the cartridges in Josh's gun belt matching the caliber of the rifle, this time.

I agree(crawdad) the remake of true grit was better , which I dint think was possible ?? so maybe its time to remake "good bad and ugly" etc. etc.
"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" has been remade...check out "The Good, The Bad, The Weird":

If you don't mind subtitles and making it an eastern/western, it's really entertaining.

And I agree that the recent remake of "3:10 To Yuma" was better than the original, and Tom Selleck's remake of "Monte Walsh" is at least as good as the original with Lee Marvin, so that's another one that was worth the time and effort.

But it is rare that any remake is better than the original. John Wayne's original "Stagecoach" is still better than the two remakes, and his "Red River" is way better than the remake with James Arness.

Alamo has been done at least three times now. Once with Fess Parker, once with John Wayne and finally the new one (dunno the stars).

I hope they don't try to re-do Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly's High Noon.

How does anyone feel about the Magnificent Seven being redone? I know it has had its sequels and was a western version of the Seven Samurai.

BTW, I just saw the Randolph Scott flick, The Bounty Hunter. In the end, three rowdy cowboys ride into town and then they figure out the new sheriff was the bounty hunter. They tuck their tails and ride out. The spokesman for the three cowboys was Fess Parker.

"The Magnificent Seven" has been remade:

The sequels to the original Magnificent Seven were quite disappointing. (The only sequel I can think of that was as good or better than the original movie is Alien and its sequel Aliens...they should have quit there!)

The original Magnificent Seven was an illustrated concert. Elmer Bernstein's soundtrack was the star, and the actors gave us something to watch while listening to that great music. If you take out the music, the action on the screen is painfully slow. But it's one of my all time favorite movies. And I liked its remake, linked above.

I also like Randolph Scott. His movies that he made with Budd Boetticher as Director still hold up well today. But I don't see them being remade.

This is one I want to see, comes out this month.:)

The Homesman / Hilary Swank, Tommy Lee Jones / 2014
Two hours, fifteen min long

How about a remake of Rio Bravo. Great story line with a classic ending. (Walter Brennen pitching those sticks of dynamite for John Wayne to shot) one of the better gun fights.

Can't see how you can improve on, or even match, Rio Bravo. Nowhere to go but down. Not a fan of remakes of my faves. My kids (ages 5 and 7) love the old classics, and actually prefer the black and white movies.

derry ,that's what I thought about true grit !but they pulled it off

I did also but when I found out that Jeff Bridges was in it I said, maybe this won't be to bad and I liked it better than the original. :)

For Rio Bravo/El Dorado maybe not an exact remake but keep the same story line. Or some others, like 'The Searchers' The only thing I didn't like about 'The Searchers' was the incorrect firearms used. A good movie otherwise though.

Jeff Bridges was perfect , what we need is a good civil war movie ! there are lots of westerns but few civil war greats.
and on a different note totally, is "Zulu dawn" this movie missed the mark so far its a travesty to the 1300 who died on the slopes of isandlwana , they where not over run by unstoppable waves of Zulu warriors in minutes ? they have now concluded that Pauline's rankers had driven the Zulu mass to ground and held them at bay with accurate martini fire till horse troops where forced too give up the flank allowing the Zulu behind and into camp(two hours)the sniders boomed that day! . and even then the troops tried to rally to colors but only managed small groups that fought on for an hour or so in squares. and the last of these was Younghusband and about twenty that where driven up on the side of isandlwana and his last words where "bayonet charge " into 20 thousand Zulu.
read :how can man die better , by mike snook awesome read

Thanks for the tip, Crawdad. Haven't seen that one yet. Just can't bring myself to see a remake of Day the Earth Stood Still with the dude from Speed. But New Grit sounds worth a try.

The Bogart version of Maltese Falcon, the definitive version in my view, actually was a remake of one or two earlier versions that are failures, IMHO. Sometimes the remake is better. Heaven Can Wait is an improvement on Here Comes Mister Jordan, thought the earlier film is worthwhile in its own right.
