What 308 carbine would you choose between the POF P-308 or a DSA FAL Carbine? Assume they would be a plinking/Hog brush gun. Eliminate parts availability from consideration.

What would you buy?

Well going with a FAL will save you $600+ seeing how the P-308 has an MSRP of $2,400 and the FAL carbines go about $1,500-$1,800. Also, mags for the FAL are about 7-10 dollars each if you know where to look. 308 dpms/sr25 mags that the P-308 uses are about $30 each.

Both will do what you want them to do. It's just a matter of cost. If you go with a FAL variant then you are saving money for ammo, which you'll need in order to plink with 308($$$$$).

I think if you don't care about anything else then you should always go the cheaper route.

Could consider a a PTR91, even though it isn't in your choices as listed. Less expensive to start, probably more accurate than the FAL, and magazines are very nearly free.

I've got an FAL and an M1A. I'd part with the FAL first if that helps at all. Never shot an AR-based .308 though.

Um, the choice was between a POF and a DSA FAL. Not a HK or M14 ect....

No, no, no, you want a CETME...

:neener:

Out of those two I would go with the FAL, for price, perceived reliability, and perceived durability.

You can not beat G3K in 308 carbine platform. Consider HK.

I've had one. In fact, I was deer hunting with one when I was 16 years old. While the HK-91 is a good rifle, depending on the job you want it to do, it can be beat.

There are more accurate 308 semiautos out there than the HK-91, and practically ANY has a better trigger than the HK.

In my quest for a very accurate 308 "battle rifle-ish" rifle, I've gone down the HK-91 road, the FAL road, the Saiga 308 road, and am currently working on my DPMS LR-308 w/ SS 24" fluted barrel.

We'll see how that one goes. So far, I think it-- by far-- has the most potential for what I am building.

Between the two listed, the FAL is cheaper, more reliable, and better tested in a variety of situations. It also has a much larger base of support with regards to parts, people who work on them, general knowledge base etc.

Unless the POF offers dramatically superior accuracy AND you need that accuracy, I think the FAL is a hands down winner here unless you want to try and wait for the SCAR-H or Massoud and see how those semi .308s pan out.
