I've got a decent size gun collection of at least 12 assorted calibers, but believe it or not nothing in 9mm. I've recently decided to to purchase a 9mm firearm but in a carbine. I read that a 16" barrel will give a regular 9mm round up to 50 yards the characteristics of a pistol-fired .357 mag . My question is what is the most effective and accurate yet not notoriusly expensive defensive round I can use in a carbine? I was thinking of Ranger 147gr 9mm +P HP for extra punch and better terminal ballistics.

I've found that most 9 mm or 45 ACP ammo will only pick up 100-150 fps in a carbine. +P+ may go up to about plus 200fps. 147 gr subsonic ammo usually stays subsonic (1100 fps or less).

I chronographed these through a Marlin 9 and Hi Point and the results were pretty consistent with onlt slight variations.

If you look around, you may be able to find Gold Dot for a reasonable price. I've picked up a lot of 124-grain for not much more than ball.
