From many of the replies recommending deep penetrating for an apartment setting, it leaves me to believe not many are reading the question thoroughly.
For an apartment setting you want lighter weigh bullets and ones that will expand and/or possibly fragment, that parts up to you. But stay away from these heavy bullets or +P+ loads. That's the opposite of what you're looking to accomplish. A good defensive shoot is a good defensive shoot. But harm an innocent and it's a bad deal all the around.
Your question is a very good question and one that isn't asked enough on this forum, IMO. Everyone generally wants the baddest round on the block. And hell, so do I but for the appropriate settings, situations and guns used to shoot them.
I would stay at, or below, 115gr weight with a low flash and hi expansion desighn.
