Set me straight, does it matter if you use .308 or Nato 7.62X51...? From the new commercial M1A's to older Receivers built with USGI barrels...getting interested in adding one to my collection, an somewhere throught the years have heard conflicting reports to be careful what ammo to use...so please educate me!!!

...does it matter ...?
By and large, nope, but you might see a difference in accuracy. It is the same as shooting .223 Remington through a 556 chamber. No problem. If the chamber is a 7.62x51 chamber, you can shoot .308 through it.

Doing the reverse? Many will say not to, many will say it's not that big a deal.

Depends on if you reload.

7.62x51 chambers tend to be more generous in most M14 clones than 308 commercial specs - particularly SA guns. Brass gets worked more, and military brass is thicker. Also, keep in mind that port pressure is important in M14 type guns and the wrong ammo can really beat up your op rod. Ideally, powders used in the M14 should have burn rates between 4064 and 4895.

Stick with bullets in the 150-173gn range if you use commercial ammo, and pay attention to your op rod.

If you reload, you'll want to look at Zedikers article on reloading for the match M14.

mine will shoot both but seems to be more accurate with 7.62 nato. even though the .308 is more expensive. i have tried american eagle 150gr. & 168gr. american eagle m1a ammo, but she likes the nato brit radway green & south african more. i will keep trying .308 though as i will probably find one that she likes more.
