From CNN, Wednesday, June 4, 2003 Posted: 6:28 AM EDT (1028 GMT) <<EXCERPT>>

=======================
"MURPHY, North Carolina (CNN) -- Eric Robert Rudolph, described by U.S. officials as a hateful zealot who carried out four bombing attacks in the Southeast, opened up to local law enforcement officers at a North Carolina jail and painted a detailed picture of how he survived five years hiding in the mountains, authorities said Tuesday.

He also pointed out his campsites on a map, and authorities found them where he said they would be, officials told CNN.

At one of those sites, officials found a semi-automatic assault rifle with a range of about 200 yards, sources said."

I wondered what assault rifle has a range of 200 yards ("just")

And why was it pertinent to the story. In fact, why is the "assault rifle" even mentioned at all? He has committed no crimes with it that we know of and he certainly didn't use it to blow up the Olympics. They didn't mention him having matches or toilet paper at his campsite but I'd bet he had both.

I hate the media.

Would a carbine, like an M1 or a PC9, be considered to range 200 yards effective? I don't know much about those, but it sounds possible.

More likely is this totally unfounded, but plausible version:

They found a rifle. The reporter did not ask the range, but either he asked or a cop volunteered that "this is a rifle that could have been used in them there sniper shootings last year."

The reporter wrote something like that in his first draft. The editor didn't like it for whatever reason (actually, that part's doubtful) so he decided to make it a simple declaration of range. The sniper shootings were supposedly from "as far as" 200 yards away, so that must be the range of the rifle.

news media = idiots all

I quit watching, reading, believing ANYTHING CNN has to say after the whole Iraq thing came to light.

Fox is the only org. with half a smidgen of credibility left, IMO. Even then, you have to take them with a grain of salt.

200 yards is 600 feet. That would be 12 fifty foot frontages of the standard house in a tract. Go out front and look down the block and count off 12 houses. I know damned good and well that I could hit a man-sized target with my SKS twelve houses away.

I would have to mess with the sights

but even my POS High Point carbine is up to that, It'll do four inch groups at the 100.

Where do people get this stuff. You really want to scare these sheeple tell 'em my story about the 7th Marines "Gunner" (CWO4- a Marine Gunner is a warrant officer that specializes in infantry weapons) I knew in '94- He could hit a "dog" target 9 out of ten times with a standard issue M-16, at 1000yds. That will put the panic in 'em.

Some people are just idiots, you'd think they would research some of this stuff.

Don't even mention to 'em what Bob Munden can do with a snub nose .38

Well if you want real range get a .50 Cal. According to Sarah Brady's logic, they can be effective up to 2,000 yards away (which obviously equals 4 miles)
In 1987, Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc., patented its self-described "armor-penetrating" .50 caliber BMG sniper rifle. Capable of destroying armored personnel carriers, aircraft and bulk fuel and ammunition sites, the .50 caliber sniper rifle is now proliferating in the civilian market. Accurate at up to 2,000 yards (20 football fields end-to-end) it can inflict effective damage to targets over four miles away. With more power on impact then any other semi-automatic rifle legally available on the civilian market, the .50 caliber represents a serious threat to our local law enforcement and national security.

On all those drug dealer busts, why didn't those criminals use the 4-mile range to shoot at the cops before they got there? I mean, you could just blow up the whole police station with one of those explosive incendiary rounds, couldn't you?

It's just like, around here, everytime there's an accident or a crime involving an SUV, that fact is prominently mentioned in the article. If it's not an SUV, the make and model magically become irrelevant.

damn...........wonder if ill get better range with my bolt action assault rifle?:scrutiny:

freakin media wouldnt know a slingshot from a mortar!

Lemme tell about the time I shot that durn pronghorn, 800 yds it was, at the full run both me and that durn loper, didn't have no fancy scope neither, just my trusty peep sight...and my trusty Remington .22 LR.....almost full dark it was.
Dang.

:what:

these media fools really are clueless now arent they.i bet if they saw someone shooting at camp perry they would gasp in horror.
