Store Owner's Son Protects Mom, Kills Would-Be Robber

UPDATED: 7:37 pm PDT May 24, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- Police say a potential holdup at a Colton convenience store Monday ended with one of the would-be robbers dead and two others wounded after the owner's son pulled out a handgun and began firing.

Lt. Robert Miller says Colton police received the call of a robbery at the store at 10:15 a.m.

Three men entered the store and one of them pointed a handgun at the store's owner and demanded she empty the cash register, said Miller.

Miller said the owner's son took quick action, pulled out a handgun from underneath the register and opened fire.

One suspect died at the scene. The second was found in the parking lot and taken to a hospital.

Miller says a third suspect also was shot. Police arrested him at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

Witnesses told NBC4's Mary Parks that the store is usually a target after payday.

Sounds like an open and shut case. The police are not a PREVENTATIVE agency..they are an investigative agency.

Yep, commit a violent crime (assault with a deadly weapon) against a member of my family, and see which part of the Authorized Use of Lethal Force I excercise :)

Hat's off to the quick-thinking son, though I am very sorry he had to fire a gun in anger. No one ever wants to have to do that, and it will be with him the rest of his life.

That's good shootin'. Nothing wrong with shooting and long as the right people get shot-in this case, they did.

I would like more details which probably are not available. Type and calibers of handguns, number rounds fired, number of hits, etc.

Of course, the defense for the injured will argue that it would've taken a mere "Please don't rob us!" on the part of the assaulted to disuade the poor victims of society from commiting their "misdemeanor". What a heinous act, that of the storeowner's son!

He did well against three targets, one with gun of its own. Thumbs up.

I agree; if people don't want me to point guns at them, they shouldn't point guns at my mom. I am not unfond of her and my kids like her a lot.

COLTON - A convenience store owner shot three men, killing one and injuring two, after they entered his business and demanded money, officials said.

"One of the store owners, who was armed, took action with his handgun and shot them. He basically thwarted the robbery," said Colton police Lt. Bob Miller. "He was protecting his mother and his store," Miller said.

The man grabbed his gun and fired after one of the three men jumped over the counter and confronted his mother, also a store owner, Miller said.

A 19-year-old man died at the scene, according to the San Bernardino County coroner's Web site. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

About 10:30 a.m., police responded to a report of three men in hoods attempting to rob the store in the 1000 block of North Mount Vernon Avenue, Miller said. Officers arrived to find one man lying in the doorway with a fatal gunshot wound. Another man who had been shot was lying in the parking lot. A third man turned up later at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton seeking treatment for a gunshot wound, Miller said. He was questioned and arrested, he said.

Police are investigating whether a fourth man was involved, possibly driving a get-away vehicle.

Miller said the two survivors, tentatively identified as San Bernardino residents Jerry Giles and Dewon Franklin, both 18, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and booked into jail in connection with the attempted robbery.

Miller said the store owner appeared to have the proper permits for the weapon and was questioned and released. A store videotape recording backs up the owner's version of what happened, he said. Barring any new information, he said, the owner will not be arrested or charged with any wrongdoing.

Police cordoned off the store's parking lot with yellow tape Monday afternoon as detectives milled about and crime scene technicians took pictures.

The tape extended as far as the center divider of Mount Vernon Avenue, forcing northbound drivers to take an alternate route until about 5:30 p.m. Lunchtime motorists heading south on Mount Vernon Avenue near Colton Avenue slowed to stare at the crowd and the body, which was still in the doorway, covered with a blood-stained yellow sheet.

Drawn by the commotion, Lawrence Vasquez shook his head when he heard what happened.

The home-security system installer used to own a liquor store in San Gabriel with his father and said he knows how potentially dangerous the job can be.

"One day, me, my father, my mother, even my girlfriend were at the store and this guy came around the back of the counter with a .22 and demanded money," Vasquez said.

"That was the day we decided it wasn't worth it anymore," he said. "It was just too dangerous."

Gun-toting granny Ava Estelle, 81, was so ticked-off when two thugs raped her 18-year-old granddaughter that she tracked the unsuspecting ex-cons down - - and shot off their testicles.

The old lady spent a week hunting those men down -- and when she found them, she took revenge on them in her own special way, said Melbourne police investigator Evan Delp. Then she took a taxi to the nearest police station, laid the gun on the sergeant's desk and told him as calm as could be:

'Those bastards will never rape anybody again, by God.' Cops say convicted rapist and robber Davis Furth, 33, lost both his penis and his testicles when outraged Ava opened fire with a 9-mm pistol in the hotel room where he and former prison cellmate Stanley Thomas, 29, were holed up.

The wrinkled avenger also blew Thomas' testicles to kingdom come, but doctors managed to save his mangled penis, police said. The one guy, Thomas, didn't lose his manhood, but the doctor I talked to said he won't be using it the way he used to, Detective Delp told reporters. Both men are still in pretty bad shape, but I think they're just happy to be alive after what they've been through.

The Rambo Granny swung into action August 21 after her granddaughter Debbie was carjacked and raped in broad daylight by two knife-wielding creeps in a section of town bordering on skid row. "When I saw the look on my Debbie's face that night in the hospital, I decided I was going to go out and get those bastards myself 'cause I figured the Law would go easy on them," recalled the retired library worker. "And I wasn't scared of them, either-- because I've got me a gun and I've been shootin' all my life. And I wasn't dumb enough to turn it in when the law changed about owning one."

So, using a police artist's sketch of the suspects and Debbie's description of the sickos', tough-as-nails Ava spent seven days prowling the wino-infested neighborhood where the crime took place till she spotted the ill fated rapists entering their flophouse hotel.

I knew it was them the minute I saw 'em, but I shot a picture of 'em anyway and took it back to Debbie and she said sure as hell, it was them, the oldster recalled.

So I went back to that hotel and found their room and knocked on the door and the minute the big one, Furth, opened the door, I shot 'em right square between the legs, right where it would really hurt 'em most, you know.
Then I went in and shot the other one as he backed up pleading to me to spare him. Then I went down to the police station and turned myself in.

Now, baffled lawmen are trying to figure out exactly how to deal with the vigilante granny. What she did was wrong, and she broke the law, but it is difficult to throw an 81-year-old woman in prison, Det. Delp said, especially when 3 million people in the city want to nominate her for sainthood and a medal.

DEPORT HER TO AMERICA -- WE NEED HER!!!

Barring any new information, he said, the owner will not be arrested or charged with any wrongdoing.
Now THAT is a real plus ..... and it appears tape evidence makes it all cut and dried. Oh it could often be that simple.

The ideal closure to a case ... BG's dealt with and good guy does not have to face arrest etc. Doesn't get much better than that.:)

Scrotum shooting hoax

Too bad that's a hoax. It's one of those stories that's so right it ought to be true.
I wonder if it could give anybody ideas.

For sure a hoax

I'm absolutely sure this one, from last year, is a hoax:

Bird To Be Declared "Enemy Combatant"

(Pentagon-AP) Defense Department officials today confirmed that Big Bird, also known as "Notorious B.I.R.D.", WILL be held as an enemy combatant.
This, just one day after the 8-foot tall, flightless yellow Bird was captured on a battlefield in southern Iraq, carrying an AK-47 assault rifle.
Bird had been wanted by federal authorities ever since he fled the country, allegedly to avoid trial for the murder of Snuffleupagus.
Sources with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force say when Bird was captured, he appeared disoriented. "He was covered in dirt, and he kept shouting, 'I shot Mister Hooper!'", according to one front-line soldier.
Sources in the Justice Department say Bird will be flown to Camp X-ray, in Guantanamo, Cuba, where he'll be held until a court martial can be convened.
The Children's Television Workshop did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment.

Rats.:(

I knew I should've run it through snopes. I just enjoyed it too much.

But hey, Who was it that said "You should never let the truth stand in the way of a good story"?
