what can I legally do with an AK parts kit?

looking though AIM's website I ran across this:

Can I build a legal rifle out of this kit? How hard would it be to do so?

I'm thinking it would be easyer and cheaper just to buy an AK from a gunshop.

Ahhhh, use it for parts.

Build an AK outta it.

Make a receiver and attach said parts. Your receiver can be a pistol or a rifle.

There are places that sell 80 percent receivers that you have to drill and rivet, but it isnt rocket science from what I have seen. Havent done it myself yet though.

yes, you can build a legal rifle from that kit. I don't know if the parts count rule applies or not though. There won't be anything illegal in the kit. If, for some odd reason, you happened to find an auto sear, the best advice is to keep quiet and enjoy your toy.


OK, not really. You should report it to the seller and possibly ATF. I'd probably just cut it in half and toss it out though.

The auto sear is useless without the extra hole in the receiver. None of the receiver kits will instruct you to make the hole, so you will have extra FA parts left over, which you can toss out once the gun is finished and youre sure that youre throwing out the right parts.

I wasn't thinking about the parts count. Is this enforced agaist gun owners?

If I did build an AK out of a kit, any FA parts will be dispose of even if it is legal to have said part.

Its quite a bit of work. For just one AK, I'd buy one already built.

The FA parts are legal to own as long as your receiver has not been modified to accept them (ie no third hole or cut rail). You can pitch them or sell them online, doesnt matter. The parts count thing will apply to any AK that takes high caps and has a pistol grip.

I was thinking the same thing. I can an AK around here for ~$300 to $400, ~$500 if I want the underfolder. I figure by the time I have the parts, tools, and how-to videos, I could by an AK.
