A freind of mine has told me he may have to move to chicago! Niether of us like the Idea but it's mostly out of his hands. What he wants to know is what can he own for firearms in chicago/ILL. He was going to by an AR but if he can't take it with him then whats the point!

Big difference between Chicago and Illinois.
Chicago = no handguns, no "made up definition of assault" weapons
Illinois = (almost) anything you can own anywhere else. Annoyance of needing a FOID card for possession of firearms and ammo. No registration of any kind.

Tell him to move to one of the nearby counties and he can own all the guns he wants except full auto. As mentioned a FOID will be required.
I can vouch for Dekalb. Lower cost of living by far...and the area is growing nicely.
If you are a shooter you definitely want to stay out of Cook Cty. One of the bigger challenges living in the Chicago Metro area is finding a place to shoot rifles beyond 100 yards. There are plenty of indoor pistol ranges and you can find sporting clubs to shoot clays (and some public land) but rifle ranges longer than 100 yards are scarce around the metro area.
This isn't entirely accurate, as Illinois does have a form of registration in place. You won't have to register the firearms you bring into the state...but for anything that you buy or sell while in the state you are required by law to keep a record of the sale.

Might I recommend owning an economical car?
Then your friend can drive in to work without being broken by the gas prices. No way would I live in Chicago or Cook County. Not until they decide that the people who live there are citizens, not subjects.

When my cousin had to work in Chicago he lived in Michigan and took the train to Chicago and subway to work everyday. Was a bit of a hassle at times but was a lot cheaper and better then living in Chicago. Michigan or Indiana might be a better option to look into. Check out the public transportation systems up around there.

1. Don't live in Cook County/Chicago. Everything is over taxed, over priced. No handguns in Chicago and the rest of Cook County has an AWB, so no "ugly guns".
2. The suburbs are okay. Aurora Sportsmen's Club in Sugar Grove (www.aurorasc.org) is my club, and we currently have the only 100 yard rifle range in the western suburbs. We have have 800+/- acres out near Waterman (south of DeKalb) that we're developing/preparing to move to. It will have a 600 yard rifle range in addition to the usual 25, 50, 100 yard ranges. I think it's going to have a 300 yard range as well in additon to the usual trap, skeet, sporting clays fields, archery ranges, indoor pistol range and BB gun range. Oh, and we're looking for new members. So anyone in and around the Chicagoland area interested let me know. I can show you around and you can shoot as my guest.

If Illinois falls, don't think for one minute that the anti's will be content. They'll come after your state next. We need to stop them here. Illinois is the battleground.

I don't think Illinois has "fallen", true we don't have CCW, but we never did and also twenty +/- years ago there were damn few states that did. Now Illinois is one of only two states left that do NOT have some form CCW. Let's agree to avoid the whole may/shall issue and how CA, MA, MD, NJ, HI, etc. do or do not issue CCW's.
There will be an AWB proposed in the Illinois State legislature this spring. (Probably one at the federal level also). How well that does in Illinois will be a bellweather for the rest of the country. If the anti's see that they can take the offensive/gain ground here, that will encourage them to try elsewhere. If we can keep them on the defensive, trying to defeat our initaitives then YOU in other states will not have to fight for defend what you have.
Illinois is the battleground/bellweather this year for stopping AWB's. If it fails here, it's chances at the federal level are rapidly diminished. JMHO.

...except here in Ohio we just abolished nearly every gun control law. The only thing left are state laws which are few and far between.

Manage your expectations and stay on top of your state legislators. The 3C's sound like they are getting ready to challenge the bill. If not this one there is another heading for the governor's desk restricting redlight cameras that could be challenged assuming he vetos and legislature overrides. The issue of home rule isn't played out yet and we have a sympathetic court in the southern district.

What iamkris said. Additionally, all long gun must be registered with the police. Tell your friend to check on the exact procedure before brining anything into the city.
