I know the basics. Two cartridges, (Evans short and long), old model and transitional models (34 rnds of short) new model (28 rnds of long). The differences in stock layout, 1500 total produced, magazine design, etc. I've done a lot of research. I've found out about making long cases from .30-40 and .303 savage, and short cases from .38-40. I have a question, though- .44 Evans long travels at 200 fps and generates 905 ft/lbs of energy. .44 Evans short travels at around 850 fps and generates 350 ft/lbs of energy. The short seems on the slightly anemic side compared to its longer brother, but 200 fps is ridiculously slow. Has anyone used ho e-made loads for a hunting application in either cartridge, and if so, how did they work? This just baffles me.
