G42. Had 50 loaded with Unique and 50 loaded with HP-38. Also had 20 loaded with some ancient WIN500HS (HS-5). They all did well. Neat little gun.

Took my new to me Springfield M1 Garand to the range and started out at 75 yards then 100 yards. Windage was good, elevation was the part to get dialed in. Had feed issues and would never eject the clip unless I racked the bolt back again. Also shoot my 91/30 and my Henry .22 Golden Boy. One of the RSO was taken back how quiet it was with low noise .22 shorts.

Yesterday set up the chrono in the back yard and clocked a bunch of old ammo. Oldest was 1930s and newest was 1980s. Mostly .22 so I used a Win. 67 with 27" barrel, a Marlin 25 w/22", a Geco Carabiner w/18", a Heritage 9", a Taurus 96 in 6"and a Bersa 3.5". For the WRF ammo I used a Win. 1890, a Browning BPR and a Marlin 783. Spent 8 hours just shooting and writing down speeds. The 27" barrel turned in the fastest speeds in every type. I have read that a .22 develops its max speed in an 18 or even 16 inch barrel but that has not been the case with my guns. I have been collecting ammo for almost 60 years so I decided to shoot some of it. Can't shoot it all, I won't live long enough.

Today I took my 6 inch and 4 inch 617s to the range. I wanted to test ammo to what my guns like, especially the 4 inch because that's what I intend to shoot the next Steel Challenge with.

I started out with Eley Force. Surprisingly everything went bang and shot pretty well. After 50 rounds I had to clean the cylinder because extraction stated to get very hard.

I cleaned the gun with a brass brush in my portable hand drill.

I then shot Federal BYOB 40 grainers. All shots went off and grouped well at 15 and 20 yards. I like practicing at 20 because it simulates Pendulum.
I kept all shot inside a 8 inch circle, most in a 4 inch groups but I had a few fliers.

Remington Golden Bullets went the best, good groups and I fired 140 rounds without having sticky ejection.

I didn't shoot them today but last week I shot Mini Mags and they worked well except I needed to clean the gun after 50 rounds. Federal 800 pack worked o.k. with good groups but still had to clean after 100 rouns.

So, Federal BYOB and Reminton Bucket O Bullets are working the best. BYOBs are getting difficult to find but I still have a few. Remingtons are getting easy to find.

My buddy Robert came over and we shot his 10-22 and my Bergara. He was hitting a 3" x 4" head on a silhouette 150 yards out and was mesmerized.
That said, he hit all the spinners ( 1/14" down to 1/4")on the KYL rack at 50 yards with his 10-22 twice. He had several misses doing it, but still, a blurry 4X scope and bulk ammo, not too shabby.

I wouldn't pass up one in .22 Hornet. Ran across one in .44 magnum at an auction last year. I regained control of my senses after I bid $1300.00. Other guy got it for $1500.00.

I never saw a 788 (or other Remington) in .22 Hornet. Winchester, Savage, Ruger, yes. Even heard of Anschutz and Sako.

My project for the afternoon is revolver shooting, I have signed up for an action match in Revolver Division and need practice in counting to six, not double clutching the double action, and speed loading.

There's a gal that sets up every year at the big Tulsa Wanenmacher gun show. She has dozens of 788s, in many chamberings.

I've conversed with her several times, talking about her cornering the market on 788s, etc. She usually has them in 308, 222, 22-250, etc - even one or two in 30-30.

But she never has any in 44 Mag. I asked her about it; she grinned and said she has one or two. Not for sale.

No wonder I've never found one. Turns out a Rem 788 was never made factory in 22 Hornet.

    Dang...
