It is a Winchester 94 .30-30. Serial number puts it mfg. in 1966, scroll engraved reciever, flat steel buttplate, plain wood, round barrel, perhaps a saddle ring that is missing. The engraved reciever and steel butt throws me off. It is not marked as a comm. or special issue, but is not a plain jane either. Any of y'all have an idea?

Thanks,
Geo.

(also posted elsewhere :) but cut and paste is easy)

The '67 Shooter's Bible lists the Model 94 Carbine ($85) and the Model 94 Antique Carbine ($94).

The Antique Carbine receiver "is case hardened colorful with classic scroll work", "brass plated saddle ring and spring cover", and last but not least "checkered metal butt plate."

For those of us who were there it was a sad day when Winchester did their massive cost saving make-over in 1964. One of the most damaged rifles was their Model 94. The new one felt cheaper and had more "pot metal" parts. Winchester tried all kinds of things to regain their MoJo, one was to make a fancier 94. This just turned us off even more. I recall 94's costing well under $100 and I also recall turning my nose up at them.

Your rifle is one of those, and it is a much better rifle that we considered them back then.
