What do you consider "Must-Have" Milsurps?

All of them! Seriously I personally think that one main battle rifle from WWII participants is achievable meaning an Enfield, Nagant, K98, M1 etc + the more the better!

As many as you can afford. The M1 Garand is at the top of my list as far as C&R rifles go. With all due respect W.E.G., I would have to elevate the FAL above a mere C&R rifle. It's more like a, "the zombies are coming and they're driving '73 Buick Electras and wearing body armor!" rifle. When a .223 or 7.62x39 isn't enough, bring out the FAL.

That depends on what you like. Enfields, for example, are very low on my list. I don't like shooting them (many left handed shooters find the bolt akward). If I can't shoot it (even if it is a safe queen) I don't want it.
I have started a collection of South American Mausers. It is one rifle strong at the moment. But any and all variants will become must haves for me. And many will be difficult if not impossible to find in any condition.
Ask yourself a few questions:
1. Do you plan to shoot you collection?
2. Can you reload? Do you like to reload?
3. How much are you willing to spend on a firearm? (gun, accessories, dies, brass, surplus ammo...)
4. Do I have limited space to store them?

Reasons for these questions:

1. If so, ammo costs and avalability become issues as might replacement parts.
2. If you don't want to reload to shoot, figure in expensive ammo for some guns, or maybe even not shooting them.
3. Don't buy a Steyr m95 because it's cheap if you want to shoot it. Surplus ammo for that is almost dried up, so you will be reloading for it, and the components aren't standard so it costs more than reloading for other rifles.
4. Don't fill your safe with cheap mosins or yugo mausers and then pass up on rare gun deals due to a lack of space. Either plan on more safes, or storage room, or make up a list of must haves and then stick to it so that you don't have to lament missed dream guns.

Hope this helps.

(My answers are)
1. Yes, see above.
2. I reload.
3. That is personal but is part of why my collection is what it is.
4. Out of room at the moment, but a new cabinet will be ordered eventually.

When I think of milestones,

Lebel 1886, Mauser 98, Garand, Sturmgewehr 44. Of course the Sturmegewehr is quite pricey, so maybe the AK will do. The AK is of course, the most produced and most issued rifle in history.

The M14 was an evolutionary dead end. The FAL was quite a good design concept and is well worth looking at.

There are a lot of other branches that fizzled. All interesting in themselves.

I think anyone should at least try to get a Ross, a straight pull Mannlicher or a Schmidt Rubin. Very few straight pull designs ever made it into inventory.

thanks Jagdpanzer

All you are going to see people say is mosins, m1s, enfields, and mausers. Which is what I agree with.

I had the fever for a while, but got over it. I had 2 98-pattern Mausers in 8mm, 2 SMLE's, 2 Mosins. All are gone, except one of the Mosins. I could think of no real utility I derived from them, and the pleasure of owning them for their own sake just faded. I still have some US milsurps, and and FR-8 (truck gun) and the last Mosin. Don't think I'll be back in the game, just don't have the room or the fire-in-the-belly.
