I bought this brand new Sig .40 barrel for my P229. Upon looking down the bore, I noticed this...I don't know what to call it...this "burr" on the lower left muzzle.

It's a thin amount of jagged metal protruding from the muzzle into the bore. I cleaned the barrel with Hoppes and a bronze brush to make sure it wasn't some kind of residue, but it's integral to the barrel. I'm mailing it back for a refund today, but has anyone seen this before?

Nope. I have 2 ea. P226 and P229 spare .40 barrels, and mine were clean, and work fine.

Sounds like a cutter didnt get it all.

Where did you get the barrel from?

If it's on the muzzle, I'm not sure you have a problem. Still, it's hard to tell without a photo. It's not unusual to have tool marks and burrs, but usually you can remove them with less cost and effort than shipping it back. If you use a stainless steel brush one bore-size larger than your bore (or maybe even bronze will work) the burr may work itself loose on its own.

By putting Flitz or some other polishing paste on cloth patch and running it through the barrel, you can do a decent job of polishing the bore. As long as you have continuity in the lands and grooves and that the muzzle is fairly clean of marks or cuts, you should be fine. Shooting it a few times may also take care of the problem.

Can you post a picture? I'd like to see it.

.

I got it on Gunbroker. I sent the same pic to the seller and he said send it back for a refund.

It did occur to me that I might be able to shoot it out, but if I buy something NIP, I don't want to have to take chances.

I posted a pic: you can't see it?

Red X for a picture.

It looks like you just put the picture file directly in your post.

It don't work that way.

You maybe can see it because it's on your hard-drive. But we can't access your hard-drive to see it.

You need the picture on a host site such as Photobucket, then you can post the link to it.

sorry about the barrel , but Great Photo......you must be a good photographer

A burr on the crown of the barrel is about the most accuracy damaging thing I can think of. I doubt a brush will remove it anyway. The best way is to recrown the muzzle.

I agree you should send it back and not shoot it.
