I am looking for a not too expensive semi auto shotgun. Primary use would be for SD/HD but I'll also probably take it out every so often for shooting clay pigeons. I need something simple, functional, reliable, and with (hopefully) modest recoil as I am not built like a world's strongman. Does the Mossberg 930 fit the bill?

I haven't shot one, but I really like the features and construction. It seems to be getting favorable reviews from those who have them.

For me, I prefer a pump shotgun for a HD gun, but the 930 is built for the task. You could get another barrel and easily switch it out for clay pigeons or hunting, etc.

I've been thinking about getting one sometime in the future, but I already have a 590 and a 500.

I would prefer a pump but my stature pushes me towards semi auto for the reduction in perceived recoil.

I think the 930 would be a good gun for you. I would see if you can at least handle one and hopefully shoot one before you buy. Make sure the stock is the right size for you.

Another thing to consider is using reduced recoil loads for your HD/SD loads. They make a noticeable difference. I think the price is pretty good for the quality of the gun.

R & R has this one for $462.02, it comes with the two barrels you're likely to want....

i love mine i have a tactical one
it is a little softer shooting the my 500
very reliable never had a problem in 1500 rounds

I've read some other reviews on here and I don't remember for sure, but I think I've heard nothing but good. Can't beat that price. I think I may actually order one from that R&R site, pending more responses (and money )

Thanks for the link.

My brother duck hunts with his 930SPX. Just plugs the mag and off he goes. Has had great results with it too, though he says he needs a longer barrel. All in all he loves his.

He said that the 930, at least his SPX, likes to run very wet. He said there was a short break in period, but once he learned what the shotgun liked it has functioned flawlessly.

Not really picky. I told him that real light loads may not cycle but does he listen no... The SPX was designed around heavy "combat" loads not number 9 shot. That and he was running it too dry. He says it runs fine with lots of oil and a heavy load.

I have been intrigued by some recent reading on the 930. While out today I stopped by Gander Mountain. They had synthetic stock 28" barrel 930's for $399. They really seemed to fit and point well for me. I'm tempted to go back and grab one for casual clay busting.

I've sorta wanted one for the tang safety, but I've resisted the urge. :D My 500 does anything I'd do with the auto and I have an auto I like except for the crossbolt safety. I don't wanna sell the Winchester, though. It's too good a gun to sell. And, a 930 would be a bit redundant. I think if I got one, it might be a 935 since the Winchester shoots 2 3/4". I've taken to shooting 2 3/4" high velocity number 3 steel on ducks, though, killer, do a great job. I bought a 10 gauge for geese, so I really have no need for the 935. LOL But, every time I think of a 930-935, these are my thoughts. I'm getting saturated with shotguns. I don't guess that's a bad thing, though, LOL.

The 930 has one thing I REALLY like, though, the tang safety. I'm a lefty so that's a real attraction to me.
