What do you think of the UN?

Here is my take on it, having been on a UN peacekeeping mission (UNPREDEP in Macedonia):

The UN military administration in Skopje was, in no particular order, inept, idealistic, clueless, self-satisfied, aimless and timid. And while "higher headquarters" almost always look a bit out of touch with reality to the people closer to the ground, UNPREDEP HQ was way beyond that. The military officers assigned from the various nations (including the US) were dunces, and the civilian administrators were multi-national hippies with a wash and a shave. All of the above appeared to have residual nerve damage from trying the brown acid at Woodstock.

And that was one of their BETTER peacekeeping missions; it actually seemed to do some good, since the various Macedonian factions actually liked having us there. And as soon as the UN voted to pull them out, all hell broke loose. Proving that the UN can not only screw up things, but also find ways to undo any good they did by accident.

That the US allows its military to serve under UN command is a travesty. If we continue to serve in UN peacekeeping missions then US military personnel should be given the opportunity to opt out. This would eventually either dry up the source or result in the creation of a new branch that is trained to work for "washed and shaved" hippies and possibly "re-educated" to work under the

inept, idealistic, clueless, self-satisfied, aimless and timid.

:barf:

Pulling out of the UN is not a realistic goal.

The UN can be used as a forum to discuss differences and a vehicle for humanitarian aid. Also while we don't need UN approval if we can get it it looks better because then US enemies have to blame the UN and can't just blame the US(which is a popular thing to do right now). In other words it is a good cover to use.

The simple uncomfortable fact of being the big dog is that we will be blamed and reviled, no matter what.

I'm pretty used to it.

How many people on planet earth are marching in the streets shouting, "Enforce UN resolutions against Iraq!"?

Uh.....zero?

Nope, they're all shouting "down with the imperialistic US, Bush is a nazi, etc, etc blah blah bleeping blah".

The concept of the UN and its predecessor, the League of Nations, is rather noble when you consider it to be a forum for countries to discuss their differences and reach peaceful solutions. Unfortunately, that noble goal cannot be achieved with selfish dictators and tyrants.

-OK, do folk here see the validity of some kind of Justice League of Nations? See, as much as I love this country, we are still a part of this world and have to play ball with other nations. I agree that the UN is a mess but I think the original idea is good. How could a nations committee be set up that's efficient and fair where folks have equal say-or is that only possible on Jupiter. There's gotta be a way to make the whole league of nations work without them meddling in our affairs. We gotta start presenting a unified front for the little green men!:D

Unfortunately, Paco, that's impossible by definition. The whole concept of United Nations revolves around medding in the internal affairs of individual nations.
