I might be going to look at an AR tomorrow. Its a Rock River Arms:

"This is a Rock River Arms ar15. It is chambered in .223/5.56. It is in great condition. It has a 20" stainless steel match barrel, aftermarket trigger, Tango Down 20rd magazine, Harris bipod, heavy duty scope rings, Centerpoint 16x scope with red/green reticles, Magpul grip with stand, and a Magpul PRS stock with adjustable cheek pad. The stock alone is worth 250. I am asking $1300. Call or text xxx-xxx-xxxx anytime with questions. Wife is pregnant and looking to thin the gun safe a little."

He is willing to take $1100 for it. Sound like a decent deal?

I personally am not a fan of RRA but they are supposed to be very accurate and if you want a long range precision rig it would do it well with a better scope.

I could be wrong but I think the scope can be had for around $60 or $70 bucks at your local Walmart> you might do a Google thingy and see what you come up with. So a scope that looks good but is a POS has no value for me unless as a wall ornament...You might ask after your research if he will sell the rifle without the scope and for how much? I do not know what that rifle's retail price is new or the availability of them at the moment; you probably do. The stock is a plus IMO

Yea, I know the scope is a cheap one so I wasn't even factoring that into the price of the rifle. A varmint-type RRA rifle is listed for $1100 on RRA's website (and it seems like around here ARs are going for at least MSRP), so factoring in the nicer stock and bipod it seems like a good deal to me.

Hard to give you a 'good' price with out seeing it, but to me----it sounds like a fair price given the extras. Not sure about the scope, that is something you will have to detmine after you shoot it. Buying without the scope probably won't make a lot of diff if it is a cheap one. Cheap or not, you will have an optic to work with.
Remember, it is the rifle you are buying. Price some new IF you can find one. Given the run on AR's now-----go for it.

What kind of aftermarket trigger? The RR factory triggers are quite nice although I've heard they can be less reliable. Either way calling it aftermarket may be misleading unless its not an actual RR. Mine is nice but if zombies arose tomorrow i'd go with what is considered semi auto milspec.

I'd try and get a hundred or two knocked off.

At that price, you're essentially paying the price that a new rifle would cost, but are getting a bunch of add ons. Assuming that the rifle is in "like new" condition, I'd say that it might not be a bad deal at $1100.

Of course, whether it's worth $1100 to you depends a lot on whether you like the stuff that he put on the rifle. What type of aftermarket trigger did he put in it? Is the bipod the swivel model? Do you like the PRS (some don't because it's long)? What's the grip with the stand? Grip pod? If so, why do you need the Harris?

It would help to know exactly what model it is that we're talking about. What sparks this is the claim of an aftermarket trigger. Most of RRA's better precision rifles come with the RRA two stage, which isn't bad at all; but he chose to replace whatever trigger his rifle came with in favor of some unspecified trigger group.

The scope does nothing for me. It's the type of scope that I'll give away to someone that is just hard up for a scope.

Decent deal, maybe. Good deal, would be around $800 to $900. The stock, barrel and trigger are the selling points of that rifle, all good pieces.

With the flood of AR's on the market the value of a used gun has gone down, now if it had DD parts that would boost up the price. I believe the new price for the base rifle was around $900.00, it would appear that he is trying to recover his cost of the add on's that he put on the gun. A used RRA should be in the $600 to $700 range, what the additional parts are worth to you is your call. I do like that stock, but it is not absolutly to have one that expensive and does not improve the performance of the rifle.

Just my 2 cents.
Jim

I'm w/ Jim: 6-800.

Which trigger is it, and why?

How many rounds down barrel?

You can buy knock-off Magpul stocks from China for 15-20 bucks-make sure it's the real deal by looking at the box it came in.

Just found out that he bought the gun used, so he doesn't know what trigger is in it, and certainly doesn't have the box for the stock. I'm thinking I might pass just since I can't be sure what exactly is in the gun.

Since you could build a solid varmet gun fir that kind of money and it would be NEW I would pass.

Could I build it, yes, but I'd have to wait 4-5 months for parts. I'd rather not have to do that (I guess I'm an instant gratification kind of guy...). I'm going to a gun show this weekend so maybe I'll find a better deal there...

With that many unknowns, and since we're talking a decent chunk of change, I would pass on it too. RRA does make some awesome varmint rifles, though. Them and White Oak Armory are probably the first places I would look for a varmint or target upper.

Being a used rifle, twice over, and having so many unknowns, I'd have to shoot it and have the opportunity to go over the rifle with a fine tooth comb.

Still, if the bipod is the swivel sort, that would go for around $60 on the used market. The stock, maybe $175. The rifle, $600 range.

If I was selling this rifle, I'd tear it apart and sell it off in parts. I really don't think he'd get the asking price from anyone that knows anything about ARs.

If I were more comfortable with the AR platform I might be willing to look it over. However, this would be my first AR and I might just go with a basic new rifle.

I'll tell you this, there are too many good ARs that can be had new for a lot less than this guy's asking price.

If you can afford to spend $1100, shoot, the possibilities are almost endless. Colt, Bravo Company, Daniel Defense, Spike's Tactical. Heck, I saw a post here on THR that the Smith Sport is selling for $600.

Just shop the features and get what floats your boat.

Found an AR today. It is a Del-Ton Echo 316 and I got it for $699 + tax (ended up being $768 with tax and 2 20 round boxes of ammo). MSRP is $750. I'm pretty satisfied with that. Apparently in Mississippi I can't buy pistols, and apparently lowers are treated like pistols so I was unable to get one of the S&W MP15 complete lowers they had.

My plan is to get comfortable with the AR platform with the upper that came with the rifle, then in a few months pick up a second upper with a varmint barrel.

Wow I thought I had it bad here in Jersey, but you can buy a lower no problem if you can find one .

It's some weird laws since I'm a West Virginian living in Mississippi. I can buy rifles all day long, but not pistols apparently.

Ah, how could I forget the photo?

Thinking about adding a Magpul MOE handguard and some sort of optic (not a scope), but that's about it.

Well, that should only apply to stripped lowers. A complete lower w/ stock should be sold as a rifle.

That's what I would have thought, too. But no matter, I think I'll enjoy my Del-Ton regardless. AND I get to start shooting right away. ;)
