The word "large" of course is entirely subjective, so Ill be specific with my personal situation. My closest indoor range is pretty far away. Over an hour each way. And I have no appropriate outdoor range around here without paying a lot to join a club (not to mention work-hour club silliness and such). Between the distance, and having the time to go, I don't get the chance to go there often. Usually it's about once a month. Which means that when I do go, I want to bring as many of my guns as possible to shoot. (since this is indoor, I'm talking handgun calibers/shotgun only) So heres my problem. Over the last couple of years and some more handgun purchases, the range bag I was using has just become far too small. I'm trying to bring at least 8 handguns (2x 6" and scoped), and now a folded KT sub2000, and enough ammo in at least 7 different calibers (.22,.380,9mm,.38,.357,.40s&w, and .45) for about 2 hours of range use. Obviously I need something BIG. All the things I find in what seems like the right size in stores though is right on that level of being "carry on" type luggage, and tend to have wheels and a handle and such. I don't want that. So my question is .. what do you bring when you want to bring a lot of guns to the range ? Because right now, its just silly for me, I'm winding up brown bagging some stuff.

Personally, I think you should go for two medium or smaller bags rather than one large bag. One bag with all that gets very heavy and awkward to deal with, not to mention that you need to make sure it can handle all that weight without ripping out the seams. Two bags are easier to handle, as well as giving you a bit more flexibility.

How about an i-shot bag. The bag has 2 zippered padded compartments. Get the pull-out stage bag insert for $29 - it has 2 more. Then buy 4 of their gun rugs at $7.95 each to put inside the stage bag. That's 8, right? The padded compartments will hold more than one small or medium gun if you don't mind them banging together. ;)

I'm using their old Tournament bag that's very similar and it is well laid out and well made. Both bags are approximately 12" x 12" x 24".

I carry most of my ammo in canvas ammo/tool bags from the gun show.

A buddy does use a black suitcase with wheels and a pullout handle. It's too heavy when it's filled.

I use two bags with 4 to 5 pistols each, and two plastic toolboxes I got from Home Depot ($4.95 on sale, $8 regular price I think) for ammo and supplies. I have a fold-up cart (good strong quaility) which I place the toolboxes on first, then the two bags. I can also stand a couple cased rifles on it if I have to. Couple of bungies (part of the cart) and it's all self contained. Roll right up to the bay and I'm good to go.

I've even put hanguns in a couple of additional toolboxes instead of using the bags. The toolboxes stack perfectly and hold more guns than the bags do. (Be sure to use a BoreStor or something to protect the pistol from scratches and the like.)

You sound like you're leaning away from a "rolling" solution, but I gotta say, that a ton or weight to sling over your shoulder. The cart works well and it's very modular (ie. I can take one box and one bag, two boxes and two bags, some rifles, all boxes, ect.)

I saw that too, and was tempted since the time is right. I just got a $200 order from Midway too. Wish I had seen that earlier since the shipping on one of those alone is like 12 bucks (UPS to me anyway)

Funny, I was just looking at what else I couldn't live without to offset the shipping. There's a week and a half left on the sale, I'm sure we can come up with something in that time.

I won this over at TFL.
Yeah I know its "supposed" to be for shotguns, still I am me, and I think out of the box.
I have always used stuff the way I wanted and not always the way it was designed be used.

I also use a LLBean Backpack, LL Bean Canvas Tote, and a '74 vintage small leather duffel bag that looks like Bob Seger, Rolling Stones or Jerry Jeff Walker had one heck of a party tossing it around. :)

My super secret stealth "nobody would think is a gun bag" is a Thrift Store Vinyl Diaper Bag with RoadRunner stickers and a set of plastic kids key hanging off the handle. :)

I even have a baby bottle stuck in the baby bottle holder. :p

FWIW a Chairborne Ranger and...and a Mall Ninja will not only shut up, quit snickering, but will pack up and leave...when you pull out a 9x23 1911 and old Gov't Model of 1911 from out of a diaper bag.
