What finish for AK?

Doing my first build, about half-way through. Not too bad exceptin' dremels seem to be made for left-handed people. Even did okay on the drill and tapping.


How do you all refinish your AK, or at least the receiver? Dollar store paint, krylon, Duracoat?

Pictures a plus! :D
 
I believe that paint over park is the most durable finish. I agree with memeval that the Brownells bake ons are the best paint type finishes. I have a Steyr Maadi that went under in Katrina and it has paint over parkerizing finish on the metal. The wood was a mess but the metal cleaned up perfectly. The chrome lined barrel also survived intact.

Kentucky, I'll be ordering a few kits soon for building up this winter. These will be my first builds as well. What kind of parts kit and receiver are you using? What are your thoughts on these components? Keep us updated on your project. Oh yeah, I'd vote paint over park as well. Guess it just depends on how much you want to spend.

I'm doing an Aimsurplus Romanian kit. Seems pretty nice, almost new except for some finish wear on the stocks, which I'm going to strip the varnish off of anyway.
Receiver is an 80% from Marsh hawk arms. Seems to be the way to go. Kinda spendy for an unfinished receiver, but it comes with every thing you need and template applied.

Thought I would try a screw build first before venturing on. If all goes well, this AK will cost <200.

I was thinking about a couple of the Romy-G kits as well since they seem to be in good condition for around a hundred bucks or so. Maybe a Polish under-folder and Tantal for when I get some experience building. I will have to look further into the eighty-percent receivers. Was thinking about going Nodakspud/DCI because of their rep. Luckily I have a much more mechanicaly-inclined buddy interested in this as well.

7 or my 8 AK builds have been done with brownell's allumihyde 2. The only one that I used something different was b/c I was doing a gold sadam replica. Just sprayed a scout rifle project with allumihyde last week. It's cheap, easy, and relatively durable. I'm hooked.
 
Looking for something different? Jegs automotive speed supply sells a VERY durable, hi-temp, chemical resistant paint. I have used it many times with cars, and they have some great colors. Just a idea!

The cans I have are also the VHT BRAND. It says "Hi Temp Engine Enamel" "SP-124 Gloss Black" " Solvent Resistant."
The second is "Brake Caliper, Drum & Rotor" "Hi Temp- Chemical Resistant." "SP-731 Racing Red"

Gunkote. It's a lot tougher if you can sandblast and parkerize then paint over it.
