Zombies?
Yes laugh, but there is a real story here for those that are interested.
I inherited a .22 from my father, who bought it right after returning from the south pacific ww2. I never saw him handle it the entire time he was alive. Aside from a few practice shots in the backyard after his death, I'd never shot it.
A decade goes by. A good friend of mine was into guns as a hobby. He tried to get me interested, but I just didn't see the point. It was noisy, expensive, and handling a firearm isn't like handling a basketball - one has to be "on" and focused the whole time or something REALLY BAD might happen. At the time, it seemed more trouble than it was worth.
I've always been a fan of cheesy horror movies, and the Romero films are cult classics in this regard. So of course I couldn't pass when they re-made "Dawn of the Dead".
It was a fun, scary and action packed film. However, after having seen it, some thoughts occured to me that I hadn't pondered before, such as:
I live in a heavily populated urban area.
Things can go from normal to $h!tsville overnight.
When fear and/or desperation take over, normal people become basically animals.
What would I do if calamity struck and the only order was that which could be imposed by the barrel of a gun?
How would I defend our home, or worse, fight our way out to safety?
(personal validation: I lived to see all these concerns played out in real life in New Orleans)
After some careful research, I bought a Ruger GP100 and a Mossberg 590, followed shortly by a Marlin levergun in .44 magnum. In retrospect, I now think these were ideal first firearms for a newbie, especially for an urban environment, although in retrospect I probably should have gone with the Mossy 500 and saved $100. I spent a lot of time at the range with my "Gun Nut" buddy, learned to shoot skeet with the Mossberg, read everything I could on firearms and defense, and expanded the collection. Even the wife has gotten into it enthusiastically, and together we have introduced friends to the sport.
Isn't it amazing what an impact can be had by a few made-up actors dressed in fake gore and ratty clothes!
