Hello all,

I’ve come across what I believe is a 1863 Springfield musket. There are no manufacturer markings on the rifle and I’ve been told it may be deactivated.

What would the rifle be worth as a wall hanger?
If it is in firing condition what would it be worth?

The pictures I have of the rifle are very poor quality.

Somebody cleaned the lockplate. I'd say about $6-800, but I that depends on the condition of the stock or barrel. No cracks, bore condition?

Do you know how to check if it's loaded?

Typically I would say that the ram rod should have markings on it to indicate if it is loaded. But truthfully I don’t know.

My black powder experience is nill. I would be interested to learn how!

I’m fairly certain that the rifle has been permanently rendered inert by a gunsmith.

That's an 1861 model, not an 1863. You can tell by the shape of the hammer, the shape of the bolster, and the fact that the bolster has a cleanout screw.

Don't let the 1864 date on the lockplate fool you. 1861's continued to be made by the numerous private contractors, after the Springfield Armory switched over to the 1863 model. The 1863 was made only by Springfield.

There are not supposed to be markings on the ramrod. An 1861 ramrod is supposed to have a swell in it, to help retain it in the stock. 1863 ramrods do not have the swell, and they are a bit larger in diameter.

That wood looks charred, as if the gun had been in a fire.
