What is dangerous range of a 22LR?

Cant remember where I saw it , but this guy was shooting complety through a semi frozen turkey breast at 300 yards with a 22 lr. Google it.

Look at the packaging, most of it says 1.5 miles.
It if doesn't hit the ground the .22 will still poke a hole in something out to that distance.

While not necessarily lethal, it still remains dangerous.

Lethal range is about 300 meters maximum.

if you were struck by a 22lr at maximum ballistic range (around 2500 yards), you would need immediate medical attention, such as a dab of antibacterial cream, and possibly a band-aid.

(of course one to the eyeball would be much worse, but at 2500yds a decent set of shades would likely save your eye)

I guess if you shoot a high enough angle, gravity will take over and it would fall at 100 or so fps. It would not feel too good on open skin. Think of a major league fastball that weighs 30 grains hitting you.

If I recall correctly, the US Army figures that 30-40 foot pounds of energy is enough to cause a casualty. Plug .22LR data into a ballistic calculator and see where the energy goes under 30 foot pounds. BSW

Lethality of the 22 LR standard velocity round

I’ve been shooting the 22LR for many years and even bought a new bolt action 22 LR rifle (Savage Mark II BTVS) so I could train more cheaply for tactical precision rifle matches. As I started to train, I actually became impressed with what could be achieved with the 22LR in short and medium distances and wondered about the actual lethality of the round, so I decided to do some research in that area.

When I was in my teens, a Boy Scout buddy of mine was killed by a 22LR by another friend of his who thought it was safe to shoot.

Can't remember the exact distance, and by now I don't care.

You shoot a gun. It really can kill people dead. It killed a friend of mine.

If it was me, I would assume a kill distance of a mile. If I'm wrong, someone might live. I won't loose any sleep over a friend living...

It is not a toy cartridge.

At even a half of a mile I wouldn't shoot at something I didn't want to kill. The loss of a friend still hurts.

It might be a fluke shot, but if you're the one killed, you are just as dead. Why even push it?

The turkey post was very informative.
I am always careful but I never would have thought that 22LR at 300 yards could penetrate 7 inches of clothes+turkey

.22

As unbelievable as it sounds, I've killed rabbits at several hundred yards with a .22 rifle. Lobbed the rounds in like a mortar shell onto plowed tobacco fields and made corrections from "dust" where the bullets were striking. In 2-3 rounds I was hitting the rabbits. I was on one hill and the field was on the next hill multiple hundreds of yards away. I was so far away that the rabbits just froze at the bullet strike and made total stationary targets. I was young and would not do it again. I'd say that a .22 was lethal far far greater distance than many think.

.22 will kill you just fine for a considerable distance. You do not need to break a single bone to make it fatal. I wouldn't let anyone shoot me with one, even for youtube.

"other than getting hit in the eye"

did you confuse the .22lr with a bbgun?

My thought was that after the muzzle velocity was expended from friction with the air, it could still hurt an eye falling back to the ground.

My inquiry was based on serious injury caused by muzzle velocity

Not even for youtube? Think of the fame you're missing out on!

my uncle worked in the medical field for 20 something odd years and saw two fatalitys hit with a .22, 1 in the head and the other in the chest. the bullet penetrated and bounced around. he said the x-ray pictures looked like someone waving a sparkler around in their body. so if anyone shoots me I hope they DON'T hit me with a .22

The Israeli M used them (.22) as a preferred weapon for the assassinations after Munich. 22lr hollow point is a good round.

MolleMan I have heard the same thing about the round changing directions and making a mess. Head shots from what I have been told "tend" to stay in the skull and make a few circuits of the interior. Very nasty.

I saw someone shoot a deer in the hindquarters from about 50 yards, thinking it would be a funny way to make it run away. Wrong. It was actually quite sad. I don't know how far into that deer's pelvis the round made it, but it was deep enough all the deer did was bleat and drag it's rear around. He ended up having to dispatch it with a head shot. Deer never came back to nibble his garden again, but not a pleasant way to go. I gained a little respect for the round then too.
