After getting my new Kabar Navy (thanks to this site) and looking at it and a few other knives this weekend, I have a question.

Why is there a semi-circular cutout at the back of the blade?

You know what I'm talking about.

Does it have a name? Why is it there?

if it is what im thinking of.......

the cut out is there to separate the cutting edge of the "handle" portion.....

not sure if its the intended purpose.....but i find it makes the blade easier sharpen

Yes, it's there to separate the edge from the ricasso. If it weren't there, you wouldn't be able to get many sharpenings out of it before the blade edge started to recede up above the ricasso, if that makes sense. Well, actually it would take a lot of sharpenings, but you get the point. With that notch cut out, you can get more sharpenings out of the knife without the ricasso getting in the way. If you look at some knives that are intended to be sharpened often, like some kitchen knives, especially Japanese knives, they achieve the same end by not even using a ricasso at all. That said, they are obviously completely different in form and function to the Kabar above.

Eliminate any stress raisers so the handle won't break off of the blade if you get frisky.
