Having lunch with a retired Marine Corp friend of mine today and he tells me that he might be thinking about opening an outdoor gun range. I told him that I dont think it is an easy thing to do. I am sure that there are some sort of laws and requirements that must be followed but a search on the internet didnt bring up much usefull info. Does anyone have any info that I can pass along or know where I can send him to find such info?

Thanks
-Bill

Contact the good folks at www.actiontarget.com They build ranges all over the country, and are very knowledgable. Their range systems are tough, reliable, and also surpass any EPA regulations.

Also contact your local NRA rep. The NRA has piles of information about opening a shooting range. Including info about government regulations, and also where to go to get insurance.

You will need lots of land and piles of money. The days where you can just rent a cat and push up a couple of berms are going away, whether we like it or not.

You had better have a black belt in EPA rules and regulations. Run a search on Google, contact the NRA and talk to your state gun organizations for starters.

I've been considering the same thing. The degree of difficulty is entirely dependent on the location, and around here it should be RELATIVELY easy. Still, it seems to me the best thing would be to locate it in a hollow, abandoned quarry, etc.

The first thing to do is to buy the NRA Range Sourcebook. This is a huge book with lots of info on all aspects of starting and running a range.
You don't have to follow ALL their advice, but if you do it will certainly help you get financing and insurance.
