I was looking on handgunlaw.us and from what I can tell it is not legal to transport a loaded gun through Oklahoma. Is that right? Even with a cdw from Ky. which has reciprocity? Please advise. Actual law citations appreciated. Thanks! Jim

A. Any person entering this state in possession of a firearm authorized for concealed carry upon the authority
and license of another state is authorized to continue to carry a concealed firearm and license in this state;
provided the license from the other state remains valid. The firearm must be carried fully concealed from
detection and view, and upon coming in contact with any peace officer of this state, the person must disclose
the fact that he or she is in possession of a concealed firearm pursuant to a valid concealed carry weapons
permit or license issued in another state.

I don't know where you getting your information off of the handgunlaw.us website but I hope you are wrong as I take firearms with me into Oklahoma regularly. The handgunlaw.us is pretty clear and includes the citations for Oklahoma law.

21 O.S. Section 1290.26 (Effective Date of This New Law 11/1/12 as Amended by SB 1785)
A. Any person entering this state in possession of a firearm authorized for concealed carry upon the authority and license of another state is authorized to continue to carry a concealed firearm and license in this state; provided the license from the other state remains valid.

Carrying a unloaded handgun concealed doesn't make much sense does it?

Title 21. Crimes and Punishments Chapter 53 - Manufacture, Sale, and Wearing of Weapons Oklahoma Self-Defense Act Section 1290.2 – Definitions as Used In Sections 1 Through 25 of This Act:
1. "Concealed handgun" means a loaded or unloaded pistol carried hidden from the detection and view of another person either upon or about the person, in a purse or other container belonging to the person, or in a vehicle which is operated by the person or in which the person is riding as a passenger

§21-1289.7. Firearms in Vehicles.
FIREARMS IN VEHICLES
Any person, except a convicted felon, may transport in a motor vehicle a rifle or shotgun concealed behind a seat of the vehicle or within the interior of the vehicle provided the rifle or shotgun is not clip, magazine or chamber loaded. The authority to transport a clip or magazine loaded rifle or shotgun shall be pursuant to Section 1289.13 of this title.

TRANSPORTING A LOADED FIREARM
Except as otherwise provided by the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act or another provision of law, it shall be unlawful to transport a loaded pistol, rifle or shotgun in a land borne motor vehicle over a public highway or roadway. However, a rifle or shotgun may be transported clip or magazine loaded and not chamber loaded when transported in an exterior locked compartment of the vehicle or trunk of the vehicle or in the interior compartment of the vehicle...

I see other THR members posted while I was writing my response. Well I guess we covered it well.

So you are ok with concealing your unloaded hunting gun in the passenger compartment.
Loaded guns need to go into the trunk or exterior locked compartment.

preachnhunt, if you're still confused after comparing THR replies to what you read on handgunlaw.us I would guess that it's due to your reading of the various "Transporting a firearm" sections and law quotations on handgunlaw.us.

As others have said already, you are legal to carry your handgun with your cdw from Kentucky in Oklahoma, in your car and on your person via OK-KY reciprocity.

But handgunlaw.us is not incorrect, they just quote our scatterbrain laws as they are written and we Okies have to do a lot of cross-refencing and link-clicking to get the whole context of our gun laws.

If you want to see one of the best examples of OK law goofiness, scroll to the bottom of the handgunlaw.us OK page and notice that we have two different reciprocal agreement sections in our law. The question that keeps coming up from licensed out-of-state visitors is whether they can carry openly in OK, because one version refers to "concealed" guns and the other refers to "concealed or unconcealed" guns. We don't have a good answer to that question!

Thanks to those who replied. I still find the wording a bit confusing, but I am a preacher, not a lawyer. Now if someone could just explain why NM won't honor my permit from Ky. I'll carry on. All of this is about an upcoming elk hunt. Just wanted to be sure. Thanks again.

Not sure why NM does not honor KY permits. That being said you can carry in your car or have it in glove box loaded. Also NM is an open carry state just dont in bars, schools and the normal gun free places.

Swing north through Kansas. We are very gun friendly. You can transport a loaded or unloaded firearm legally in your vehicle.

Drive to Joplin, Mo. From Joplin take Route 66 to Highway 160 at Columbus, KS. From Columbus stay on Highway 160 to Liberal, Ks. Then you turn Southwest, drive through the panhandle of Oklahoma into New Mexico.

You will be surprise at some of our scenery. The Gypsum Hills are by Medicine Lodge are beautiful.
