I just had a guy call me a god-hating atheist (There's no such thing, I know) but basically, he was disgusted with me, because I said I'd be more than willing to shoot someone for stealing.

You come into my house, steal something, with I don't know what other bad intentions and I put some lead in you and __I'm__ the bad guy and he's the victim???

"You must not believe in God.. people who believe in God would never use a gun.." he says to me...

Is this what our churches are teaching now, this commie stuff??

I'm sad.. that's all I can say... :( Our country isn't right anymore.. Whatever happened to selling your tunic and buying a sword with the money??

Hell in a handbasket, from the government to the churches...

The Gospel Bible mentions the word “sword” over 400 times. This poor miss-guided soul needs to change his strategy from listening to the preacher to reading and interpreting the holy Bible on his own.

There are plenty of sections of the bible where either God or Jesus charge you with the task of protecting yourself and your family and your community.

Do a google search on self defense and the bible.

These "bible tells me to be a pacifist" people have no idea what they are talking about.

Spot on, Ze - genuine pacifism is heretical, an insult to God, and a clear dereliction of man's duties before his Creator and his neighbor.

Of course, finding a priest/minister/pastor who will actually tell you that can be a daunting quest.

Luke 22:36 - Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Don't worry about him... he is obviously not educated about the Bible or firearms. My youth (college) pastor owns more firearms than I do. :)

Depends on which "God" you worship...

of a spear on the way without.

Jesus instructed the disciples to carry a sword. I believe one of the disciples struck a man down.

Source: Luke 22:36
He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword;

"You must not believe in God.. people who believe in God would never use a gun.." he says to me...

Accuse him of having an "overrealized eschatology". See what he says (probably "huh?").

That is the problem though. He thinks we should have the "The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox" peaceful state right now, when that cannot be.

"Judge not...", right? Then smile at him. :D Oh yeah, feel free to print out a copy of my "Shootist's Prayer" for him.

That is another encounter of another "religious" guy clouded in his own beliefs rather than what the Bible says.

Majority of religious folks are merely spectators, rather than true disciples of God. But there are are those out there that know what they're talking about.

I guess your "buddy" forgot about the battles of David, Jericho, Assyrians, Ammonites, Babylons, Moabites and the Roman Army.

I am an atheist (perhaps even Orwell's embittered atheist - 'the sort of atheist who does not so much disbelieve in God as personally dislike Him') and I find shooting someone over material goods to be unconscionable. Guess I'd blow the dude's mind.

I kind of like the King David approach.
"for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"
Then ROCK his world.

Biker LOL, No
That was just before a young shepherd boy named David took out a very large enemy soldier named Goliath, using a projectile weapon.

He did believe that God was on his side.

What I find interesting is that this person would accuse me of the same thing for holding the same position on stealing.

And I teach Sunday School every Sunday morning to 4 year olds.

Let him stew on that.

God also tells people not to falsely judge others. Believing in God has nothing at all to do with whether or not you follow God's Word. Calling you an unbeliever when he had no way of knowing that just makes him appear misguided.

My pastor teaches a lesson of triple compound punishment. When you pass false judgement or gossip, you get the punishment for that sin. You also get punishment for the mental sin of arrogance. Then whatever punishment that person was to get, you get instead. My pastor always taught that Christians would do best to keep their mouths shut. (though most or many don't)

The Bible is pretty consistent in supporting self defense and military service. Jesus preached a message of peace because his purpose was to conquer souls, not land. You shouldn't attack someone for trivial reasons, but you should protect your family and country.

The turn the other cheek thing is one of the most mis-interpreted things in the Bible. A slap on the face was considered a big insult in those days. To turn the other cheek was to essentially say that you don't care what the other person thinks. As far as the selling your garment and buying a sword, I think that this verse is also given when few realize the context. This was right before Jesus got arrested by the Pharasees. After He said it, the disciples said that they had I think two swords with them and Jesus says it is enough. Now, a lot of pacifist folks say that He is being sarcastic or something because he was speaking metaphorically. Either way, it seems the general consensus among scholars that He said it was enough because they didn't get the point of what He was saying. But, to say He was speaking metaphorically is unjustifiable based on what the scriptures say. Not long after Jesus says this, He is arrested and Peter uses one of the aformentioned swords to cut one of te arrestor's ears off. Jesus immediately puts it back on. Now, if Jesus was God, He would have known Peter was going to do this. Jesus obviously didn't want the disciples attacking the Pharasees because He put the ear back on. So why would He have told them to get a sword? The only way it makes sense is if you consider that Jesus was speaking about the near future, as in after He was crucified and the disciples become outcasts. That explains His frustration at the disciples gung-hoeness before they go to the garden. After Jesus was crucified, the disciples would face persecution and have to fend for themselves on the road. They would have to be able to defend theirselves against robbers and such. Jesus obviously recognized this. However, for a complete understanding of the biblical views on self defense, one must also consider that there are also times in the Bible when people are obviously supposed to not fight (such as persecutions), so you have to have a balanced view. As far as military is concerned, never did Jesus tell a Roman soldier that he must quit his soldiering after converting.
