What is the best but most economical .223 ammo to shoot?

I am going to have my S&W M&P 15 in a couple weeks but i am confused on which ammo to buy.

What is the best ammo to buy that is not too dirty but really economical and shoots good??
 
I just got some Tula 223 from cabelas that was not to expensive. somthing like 160 rounds for $50 after shipping. I think it was a sale though. Just keep an eye out for the sales.
 
well i rather not handload....my friend had bought 100 rounds of federal ammo at walmart which i am going to do but is silver bear or PMC a really good amm as well?
 
I'm reloading 55gr FMJ remmy boolits in front of H335 in my reused/found/begged cases on Lee gear for .17 cents per round; that's how you shoot ALOT cheaply.

You can get a good basic reloading bench setup with this gear for less than $150 that will load accurate ammo & keep you busy watching yer nightly shows, and it'll all fit in a closet or on a small table. Most of the work is in case prep;

just cause ammo is easy to get again now, don't get lulled into a sense of comfort.
If you can have 3x the quantity of ammo reloading vs. buying, and hoping you can still get
what you need the next time the panic starts, then don't be bitc#in about paying
.60-.70 cents for stuff you're buying today for 30-40 cents (that's IF you can find any). A gun without ammo makes a bad club-
(except a Garand)

and i also do not know how to reload so thats why i would rather not do it and take the chance....but i dont mind spending the money but i would like good ammo for a fair price not like hornandy thats like 30 bucks a box which is redic
 
I have to second Larry with the 100rnd bulk packs, as well as the Winchester white box; and for cheap non-reloadable ammo: Gold/Silver/Brown Bear. PMC is good stuff as well, but if you aren't reloading (or planning to) Bear is the way to go IMO.

Um I sell PMC bronze for $8.99/20rds that equals .45 cents per round, that should be about the going price for PMC. Which is pretty good ammo for the price.
 
Midway has some Prvi Partisan @ $9/20, $12 for their 75 match grade that I like. Aim has it even cheaper. Don't be put off by Prvi's lack of vowels, it's good stuff.

"Best" is a broad term.

If by "best" you mean premium ammo for a comparatively reasonable price, I would look to Hornady.

They make some real good ammo in $1 per shot range.
 
Im pretty sure that 'best' and 'most economical' are mutually exclusive when referring to factory loaded centerfire rifle ammo. Sorry, I know thats not much help :p

That said, I will also add in that the Federal bulk packs (100rds) will satisfy most if not all but the most demanding of shooters.
 
Best and most economical don't usually live in the same sentence.

Black Hills new or reman is pretty tough to beat for quality, and price is reasonable, but you can always find cheaper, especially by sending US$ to former soviet bloc countries.
 
ammunitiontogo.com has silver bear for basically 25 cents a round right now, just saw it at the gunshow in Houston, i think it is either 250 rounds or 500 rounds, or 1000, can't remember which, just email them. Silver bear is quite good, and is the only steel case ammo I would run through an ar , since it is
zinc coated.

The Tula t/c ammo mentioned above is a great price as well, for a great
perfoming ammo, but if it is steel cased and lacquered, I don't remember if
it is or not, then I would not use it in an ar, but I remember using it in a bolt
gun.
 
as stated before the only way to get top quality at a reasonable price is too reload

IME you can't save all that much reloading .223 unless you are looking for match grade precision or something unique. When I load plinking rounds I get pretty close to breaking even (I use LC/Win./Fed. cases + Hornady 55gr. FMJ + Varget). Perhaps I am doing something wrong... dunno.gif
