I am shooting a 1911 Kimber and I use it mostly for target practice at the local in-door range. Any suggestions for brands and types of ammo? Are there any types that are more powerfull than others? I want to experiment but I don't want to spend $500 to do so. That's why I'm asking the experts to narrow down the choices. Thanks everyone.

Federal American Eagle, Winchester White Box, CCI Blazer and Remington UMC all are good basic 230 grai ball ammo. They are all readily available and reasonably priced. The generic 230 grain ball ammo should work well in your Kimber.

Some may post that one brand or other is "dirty" or not as powerful in their experience. As long as your gun functions and shoots accurately who cares. And we do clean our guns don't we?

Try many different types and go with the one that you feel produces the best results. There is no "best" just best for you.

For plinking range use, I could care less what I use - I use the cheapest I can find which is usually the WallyWorld WWB.

For self defense, then I care a lot an cost is not an issue. I like the Ranger +P. :D

The Kimber is nice because it will digest just about everything.

There is plenty of cheap ammo out there for practice.

However, some ammo especially .45 ACP practice smokes to much for me, in some cases it's really nasty smelling. The remmington UNC, and Remmington practice ammo for the .45 acp just smokes to much for me. The CCI blazer practice ammo is usaully cheap for the .45 acp and it doesn't smoke as bad. My favorite is Winchester practice ammo, 230 grain ball ammo at wall marts for about 22.99 for one hundred rounds. I have seen it cheaper at sportsman's warehouse sometimes, but usually that's a good price. You can buy bulk ammo from online stores like www.surplusammo.com and others online stores. I usually use federal hydra shoks, or Winchester ranger rounds JHP's for self defense especially in my 9mm Glock 17. In my .45 acp, and .40 S&W sub compact I usually use Federal Hydra shoks JHP's for self defense. With a mix of Corbon, and Double tap ammo in between. I wouldn't use any ammo with steel casings in your automatics it will wear out your extractor alot faster than brass, or ammunimium will.

I have used in the past and currently all the above mentioned brands and they have all worked out wonderfully for me. They are perfect for range time, especially extended range sessions 300rds + and so on. as far as jhp's for personal protection, i know this isn't what you want to hear but it is best if you test out the various kinds out there, to see which ones work best for you. ie, the one that is accurate, feeds properly, and is controllable for you in the way of recoil. I personally use hornaday xtp's in my hd/sd guns and they work perfectly for me. chech them out if you want a good jhp. but there are many more out there as well that will do you good. remington golden sabers, federal hydra-shoks, speer gold dot's just to name a few. but do test out the different ones, each pistol shoots different rd types and sizes differently. get the one that is best for you and the gun in question.

and don't worry about getting ammo that is "dirtier" than others, cleanning is half the fun!:)
