I'm really into buying the "classics" or "standards".

I don't mean old guns, or "back in the good old days" guns.

For instance, to me, the 10/22 is the standard 22LR rifle. I like others perfectly well such as the Marlin 60, but to me, they all are compared to a 10/22.

Shotguns, it's the 870. Yes, the Mossberg 500 is plenty good too, but the 870 is the standard.

What would you consider the classic or standard bolt action rifle?

Is it the Remington 700?

.308 Winchester was introduced as a sporting cartridge in the Winchester 70 and Winchester 88 (lever action).

Sooo ... I vote for the Model 70.

The rem 700 was merely the first cheap entry level bolt action for full on rifle cartridges.

Classic = a win 70 or 54 or an old Mauser sporter

I have to agree.

The Remington 700 was made inexpensive enough for more rifle-owners to afford. But the Mauser action is definitely the classic, and the Winchester Model 70 made that classic available to the hunting masses.

To me "Classic" has to do more with the stock style and looks than does the make. The Rem 700 Classic and the older Mdl 70s certainly fit that bill. I've owned them all but my favorite and most used for Deer and Elk is a new production Ruger Compact Magnum in .308 Win. It just fits me better and I like the looks more than the others. http://ruger.com/products/m77RugerCompactMagnum/models.html
