What is the difference between an AR15 and an M4?

I can't think of any reason why police would need full auto.

For fun of course. That was the apparent reason they bought it. That and the uber cool factor. It was one sweet machine. As far as the LEO's need full auto, hey you never know. Why not? It is select fire. Terrorism does exist. Could be it came to that department by the setup where police get weapons the military happens to be retiring. Local PD's end up with all sorts of stuff they could never afford because the military gives it to them.

That PD that had the M4 probably has 15 LEO's tops. My friend is chief there so he gets to carry around the fun stuff I guess. He was sweating pretty heavy having it away from the station and had to get it back quick. He just brought it by to show us real quick. I'm glad he did.

I do seriously wonder how that PD managed to find money in the budget for what had to be an incredibly expensive rifle. I'd guess it had to be the deal where the military was providing weapons to PD's free of charge. The area that PD covers has a very large complex that could be a prime target for terrorists. I won't even mention what it is because I wouldn't want to give any of them any bright ideas but they could create massive havoc by messing around at that complex and it wouldn't be at hard to do. Even a small bomb could create unbelievable damage. They could push a big chunk of the country off the rails with a well placed IED. If I described the situation you would know I'm right about it. That PD having some anti-terrorism equipment is not such a bad idea. I'm telling you that terrorist could cause a massive disruption there if they thought about it and it would a far cheaper operation than 9/11 was. It actually scares me to think about it. I'm not down on that PD having that weapon. It might actually do a lot of good some day. They could cause gigantic damage there and that's why I'm not telling where it is. Let's put it this way. A lot more than 3000 people could die and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
