Interesting story…Buddy of mine was willed guns from a real close friend of his that passed couple months back and everything was in 6 safes…3 he had the combination for. Anyway, my buddy calls asking if I can get into the safes (three), told him I’d have to see them first, they were pretty big and very old, probably 50-60’s vintage. Out of my league, so I told him to contact a local lock company, well they tell him something like $3k or they would haul them out for $1k, buddy says thanks, but no thanks. Calls me back again, I tell him I can get inside but they will all be scrap when finished as I’m going in the side, he says no problem. First safe we open has the M1 and I about crap my pants when I saw it, he doesn’t know anything about it so I tell him what little I know about Garands and this one being an M1D is special, do not sell it until you talk to me first. After about 5 hours we have all of them open, he and his wife are carrying out the contents while I’m trying to get the feeling back in hands and arms from running a concrete saw, swinging a sledgehammer and using an 8’ pry bar. They walk in and offer the M1D to me for helping, after probably 30 minutes of me telling them what it’s worth and that I didn’t do that much work…they refused in the end. There were some really nice pieces we pulled out of those safes and I was glad I got to help him in getting the gun his friend passed to him.
