My son and I went to the gunshow this weekend and picked up a savage axis 2 in 30/06. It came scoped with Chinese "weaver" glass, which is crap. I pull the scope and mounts, clean under the bases and lock tight them back down torqued to spec. I then rest my Nikon glass on good top-mount weaver rings, and the scope is too short.
I order a 1 piece rail, and then attempt to remove the bases that I just mounted, only to round those hex heads smooth. I then had the joy of drilling out those screws on a brand new rifle.
All is well, the old base came off with much pursuading, and we got the new rig shot in yesterday. It's a shooter.
