Several months down the road I wll be in the market for a CCW 1911. Of course one of the brands I am thinking about is Colt, as well as Kimber or
Springfield. I of course would consider others as well. I am looking for a 1911 I can carry comfortably, under 25 oz empty weight if possible. I will also designate it for Night Stand dutyl.

So, all of you 1911 fans please chime in and give me your opinions. I have never owned a 1911 but feel that I should at least give it a whirl once.. As I said it will be months down the road, but I am a research nut about things I know little of and value the knowledge/opinions of THR folks. Oh yes one more thing, I would like to keep it between $600-800 and new...

The Colt Lightweight Commander is the closest fit in "full size". 4¼" barrel and full 7 or 8 round capacity magazines.

The Colt Defender or Lightweight Officers ACP (out of production) are lighter and have 3" or 3½" barrels and a slightly shorter grip reducing magazine capacity by one.

Bluesbear or anyone else...Do you have a link for the lighweight Officers Colt in 3" or 3 1/2" barrel? I would like to be able to get the specs. The Colt site leaves a lot to be desired.

Anyone else with other ideas please feel free to chime in...Any and all comments are appreciated thanks...

I second what grimlock said, I got a chance to fondle and shoot the scandium 1911 last week and i was amazed at how light it was. Recoil was a bit snappy, but I think that may have been due largely to the grips. Anyway, it's definitely worth a rental.
