What is the most accurate load combo for an M1A?

I have experience reloading for my 8mm mauser; so I understand the general sequence of building the optimal load.

I am now reloading for my new M1A Supermatch. I am looking for the best possible accuracy (but who isn’t?) for long range work.

So where should I start? And moreover, where should I not even consider going?

The two components I have nailed down are 1) CCI #34 primers 2) sierra matchking bullets.

I need help picking the bullet weight and the powder type. (I know this all “depends on the individual rifle,” but there has to be more success with certain components, and that is what I am requesting. If I have a more focused starting point, it will save me time and $$$!)
1) 165gr bullets? 175? 200? Et cetra
2) powder? Varget? IMR4895? Et cetra

Thanks for all the recent help!! I will let everyone know how this all works out!

First off, if it won't shoot 168grHPBT & 41.5gr IMR4895 in a surplus case then there's probably something wrong with the rifle. That's a good load out to 800yds and is pretty much the default match load. The Nosler J4 bullet will shoot into the same spot and just as well.

175's at 2550fps are popular for 600yds. 4064 or Varget should work well, 4895.

FWIW, I've found that, using the 168 Sierra Matchking bullet, my M1A shoots more accurately when loaded with IMR4064 powder than it does using the traditional IMR4895. (BTW, accuracy with LC Match ammo using the military FMJ bullet was unimpressive in my rifle.)

I later read somewhere - but can't confirm - that Federal's Gold Medal Match ammo used a non-cannister grade of IMR4064.

What you really want to look for is match LC brass or use IMI match 308 brass. It is more hearty for use in gas guns. I have shot countless thousands of the 168 SMK, LC Match case, Fed 210, and IMR 4895. I would think your best accuracy will be found with a little leg work. RL 15 and 4064 are good choices too!

For what its worth, my Supermatch seems to like 168's (seirra's of course) and 4895 while the NationalMatch likes 150's (palma's) or 155's and 4064 better.

As it was stated above, if it does not work really well with 168's and 4895 you have a problem. Fix the gun then figure the load.

Good luck. The M1A's are very accurate!

My M1A loves 175gr Sierra Match king #2275 with 39.0gr of Alliant Reloader 15 pushing it with a standard large rifle primer.

Varget in M1A

Anyone have good luck in using Varget and a 168 grain SMK in surplus cases for an M1A? If so, what was your best load? Thanks for your time.

I had good accuracy (MOA or sub MOA) with 147 grain Winchester boattail FMJs. They were overruns at first, then pulldowns.

I used IMI, LC, and other surplus cases and enough H4895 to drive the bullets at around 2,550 fps. (Many reloading manuals should have a load in that area.)

Primers were CCI Large Rifle at first, then I used Remingtons. No problems were experienced with either type.
