What is the Precision "M4" Rifle in Iraq?

I'm drawing a major blank. Can anyone tell me what the precision/sharpshooter version of the M4 currently being fielded in Iraq is called? I'm wanting to modify an AR in a similar fashion for a coyote gun and wanted to look at the specs.

I believe there have been a couple of iterations or more, but for the life of me, can't remember what it's called.

If anyone has links on the iterations, history, etc., of this platform, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Are you talking about something like a squad designated marksman's rifle (DMR)?

If that is the case then think 20" match grade medium-heavy barrel, free floated, with an upgraded trigger group, and an optical sight on a flat top upper.

If you are thinking of the special operations version then you are looking at an 18" match barrel with brake/suppressor mount, free float tube, flat top upper, match trigger, extended rail on top, and a good optic.

Both will have BUIS as well.

Coal,

Yes, it's a DMR, but I'm looking for the model designations and specs.

There is no "precision" M-4 carbine unless you mean an M4 that a private decided to put a bipod and a Tasco 3X9 scope on. There is the M16A4 (20" barrel, flat top) used by the USMC and also issued in the Navy and USAF. There are DMR rifles like the M14 and there is all the gee whiz stuff used by SOCOM units.

I had a DMR in Iraq but it didnt have its own designation. We sent them to the Army Marksmanship Unit who built them up for us.

But it was a flat top with a free floated bull stainles barell and had a nice semi only trigger. Mine was topped with an Acog. GREAT RIFLE!!!

Horse Soldier and rob_s,

That's it - thanks. It was the SPR Mk 12 Mod 0 and Mod 1 versions I was trying to remember.

Are there any web sites with some details on components? I'm not planning an identical copy, but want to look at incorporating some of the concepts.

Thanks again.

That Wikipedia page does a pretty good job of describing all of the components. Is there something specific from there that you're missing?

No real correct answer to that one. SOF and the USMC are using variations of the MK-12 and several local things have been done buy various Army units.

The official solution is the M-4 with a ACOG 4x.

For concepts employed in the custom guns:
1. Free Floated barrel(free float tube)
2. "Match" Trigger
3. "Match" barrel
4. "Match" Ammo

good luck

I rarely rely on Wikipedia for accuracy on technical details. If some, such as yourself are verifying that the information there is accurate, then that adds merit. Thanks.

I can't verify that it's 100% accurate, but it seems to gibe with what I've read elsewhere.

Trying to mimic the issue guns is like trying to hit a moving target as they appear to have been, and continue to be, in a constant state of flux.

Unless you're just looking for a collector piece, I'd suggest that you tailor the gun to your needs rather than base your build on what the military is using.

Not looking to mimic it. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not looking to build a clone, since my use is different than the SPR use. Read this, as tailoring for my needs.

I'm interested in studying the specs and the iterations of the model. I want to build something similar, but there are some changes I want that suit coyote hunting better.

According to what I've read, the Recce is a concept that led to the SPR. The SEAL teams were adding a 16" barrel and an ACOG to the M4s used by reconaissance teams to give them just a little extra reach. They went to SOCOM/Crane to have some more made and the Army got involved. The resulting mutation was the SPR.

Since the Recce was never really formally established as a particular type of rifle, there are a lot of variants built around the same idea (a slightly more precise carbine basically).

Never heard of it. Maybe an M4 with some cool stuff attached to it. The M4 is just an M4. From the sounds of the other posts and what I know, thats about it. There is not an official "precision M4". Some units may have added and done stuff on their own and called it "precision" but in the end its still an M4.

travis74,

Re: the "M4" moniker, it's clear what I'm referring to when I used the term "M4". If I had said "M16", I'm sure someone would be quick to say, "there's no precision M16..., blah, blah, blah". "there's no precision AR-15 being fielded..."

Not remembering the model that I'm asking for, is the reason for the thread.

How about this? "What's the name of the rifle (OOPS, I mean carbine!), that's being used in Iraq, chambered in 5.56x45 NATO, has a scope on it and has been accurized by the Army/SOPMOD/Crane/vendors for DMR applications?" Would that fit in a subject line?

By the way, it does exist - read this thread.

Sigh...

Am I testy this morning or what? :)

He refering to an SPR type or a Recon version thereof

The former has a 18 or 20 inch match barrel and the later has a 16 inch barrel of the same

waterhouse,

Thanks. That looks like a good thread for ideas. Those are the type of things I'm looking for, too.

For a coyote gun, I'm planning to put a flash hider on it, instead of a brake. I'm not sure about a fixed or adjustable stock, yet, but a SOPMOD stock would give more flexibility, depending on the thickness of a coat or jacket and whether you're lying prone or sitting.

Thanks again.
