What is the Ruger 10/22 .22 LR effective range?

I can kill an 8" balloon at 200 yards with my (non-stock) 10/22 no problem.

A round of CCI Green Tag (that's a sub-sonic round, not a superduper ultra mega lightspeed round) will zip right through an aluminum frying pan at 175 yards.

And the question is.........................?

Stinger, if you are shooting targets, shoot as far as you want to. You will find the "stupid" distance.

Animals? Then make humane kills.

With a rest, I can head shoot a squirrel at 50 yards. Same with a rabbit. Body shot at 75 yards or more would probably leave you with a wounded animal.
10 yards? With a 30 rounder, I would take on the guy kicking in the front door.

Very subjective question. Other than the scope. I like peeps but there is an 18 X 32 X 44mm setting on my 10-22. I bet they cannot see that fly at 150 yards.
Effective range for pest, varmint elimination using hyper-velocity ammo like Stinger HP or Stinger Segmented HP or Aguila HP rated at 1,750 fps.

The round is capable out to 150 on tree rats and rabbits. I doubt your gun is up to it though. I'd take a shot at a rabbit with my Anschutz from a rest after sighting in at 150, but that Anny is in a whole different class than your 10/22

I think folks underestimate the killing range of the .22LR, and most other cartridges for that matter. For the .22LR will kill effectively much further than the average shooter can accurately place a bullet. I always thought that out to 125yds or so rabbits went down just as hard as they did at 50yds. The trick is hittin' `em just right at extended ranges.

I have a Beeman air rifle chrono at 843 fps using .177 Silver Jet Pointed pellets that I have taken jack rabbits. I'm not good at making judgements of distances but I would guess at least 50 yards on this one definitely not more than 100 yards.

Your pellet rifle doesn't have half of the power that .22lr does. Especially with those hyper velocity rounds you are talking about.

Like I said, I don't think your rifle is up to the task at 150Y in it's stock form. Your rifle was not designed as a target rifle. On the other hand, a good quality target rifle will be accurate enough to hit a rabbit in the vitals at 150y using a rest. I'm not talking low end and budget rifles here, I'm talking $700+ rifles. I'm talking accurized Kimber 82, accurized Winchester 52D, accurized Anschutz rifles based on the model 54 action, and the like. I'm not talking about marlin model 60s, ruger 10/22, or the mossberg plinkster, or anything you are buying at walmart. You can customize a 10/22 to be that accurate, but you are spending A LOT of freaking money to get it there. You are basically building a new 10/22 around a receiver (and even those can be replaced with better ones) and your costs are up and above what it would run to get an already setup anschutz in many cases. Hell, for a target rifle you can spend 400 on peep sights alone (and that is easy). The set I lust after are about $600 from what I can tell but it could be more. The iris is about 200, the front sight is the same... I can't find any prices on the rear sight base.

:uhoh: Don't want to spend that kind of $$$$ on this caliber. I could get a real gun then at those prices:D
Those are definitely out of my price range. I wouldn't want to put on a $400 scope on a 10/22 maybe to go as far as a $200 Nikon Buckmaster scope but I would want to keep everything financially paired. Don't need a peep sight that costs twice as much as the rifel:eek:

Stinger - If the rifle hadn't been shot in the olympics, I wouldn't consider buying a 600 dollar set of sights either. I'm still arguing with myself about getting a whole new base or just a new iris / front sight combo for 400. My dads uncle bought the rifle off the olympian that took gold with it. It doesn't have the same barrel on it any more, but all other modifications are still intact and the action is the same.

I would say if it bothers you that much just go ahead and buy it cause you only live once plus what other way will you find out if you don't just get what you want if you can afford it?

It doesn't bother me... I just really want the gehmann setup. I can use a gehmann iris with the redfield international sight base I already have on it and my redfield front sight should also work. I basically want the polarization offered on the gehmanns, which isn't offered on the redfield iris I have on it. The iris that is on it would be worth about 100-150, so I could part it out.... but I'd rather keep all the parts for it that I inherited it with. The sights on it right now are worth about 250, maybe 300.

If I could afford to drop 400-600 and not have the wife pissed I would, but it wouldn't be on sights.. it'd be on a CCW piece for myself. That reminds me... I have to go fill out some paperwork.

Oh, don't discount the .22lr as not a real rifle or caliber. That round has killed more people than you can imagine. It has also taken many large game animals (poachers love to use it on deer because it isn't loud and it'll do the job). I believe caribou on this sight hunts moose with it (though it could be a larger round).

-edit- Correction. He shoot caribou, not moose. http://thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=6527450&postcount=29

Yes I know what you mean not on the sights then again your wife doesn't need to know
about the $400 to 600 went to.:D

stinger - 400-600 will be noticed, no matter where I pull the money from. It hits the account, and therefore there is a record of it. I don't keep a slush fund as I'd rather be honest with her. This year it was my reloading gear... maybe next year. For about 6-700 I can get a very nice carry arm that I will be glad to pass on to my daughter in 20.5 years.

This is true. Can't believe now how much guns have gone up in price.
