I don't have any photos yet but this is a mauser based action. I looks just like a portugeuse 1904 but this gun has some markings that look middle eastern of some sort, maybe Yugo/Serbia? It has a reciever dust cover that slides over the action. The magazine looks too short to be an 8mm and the bore looks like a 7mm or 6.5. It has a crest but its small and hard to see.

This rifle was brought back from europe during wwII. It looks perfect like it was traded for or something, not used.

Any ideas what this might be? I'd guess the dust cover that slides forward and back over the reciever would be a dead give away but I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Without pictures...

Lovesbeer 99--We can't do much besides spin theories in the air. There are SOOO many Mauser variants. And your description makes it seem to be some sort of unusual oddball.

I'm glad for you that it's in nice shape--whatever it is!! Pls get that digital camera out & take & upload some photos.

Is the dust cover attached to the bolt or the receiver? Arisaka dust covers are mounted on the bolt and the Siamese Mauser has the dust cover mounted on the receiver.

Thanks for all the clues. I determined it's a Siamese Mauser. I'll keep researching but based on the markings, the dust cover and the crest there is no doubt. I'll have to figure out how this was picked up in Europe though (maybe I was mislead by the WWII story, or the teller was confused about the familiy members story)

It has not been converted to 45-70. I'll be curios to find out why these were converted to this caliber so often? Were other mausers converted to
45-70?

Thanks
