I'll second that opinion. It doesn't look like it could be anything else--solid piece of metal, numbers on it, kinda short.....

At first glance, I thought it was a "charging handle". Then, someone was kind enough to point out that it was graduated, so we did a quick google on it. Yeah, I'm not gonna argue. It sounds like they know what they're talking about. ;)

Here's the Gauge in use (from Fulton Armory's pages)

Goes for $34.95 from them.

Thanks for the input! C-5Driver. You would happen to have a like handy for the pic? Maybe I can get a little more info on it. I measured it & it does have "steps". All measuring around .300" so a muzzle errosion gauge makes sence....I guess  Does anyone know what the graduations mean. There is only a "2" & a "0" for markings. How would you know what would be "too big"? Thanks Tim

Look under M1 Garand or M1A parts and accessories. Toward the bottom of a rather large online catalog page.

Don't think they have much for directions, they're only trying to sell 'em.

The "0" indicates a new barrel with no appreciable wear.

Over "2" is getting quite worn and if it swallows the gage, it's time for a new barrel.

M1 muzzle wear gauge. If you don't want it, send it my way :D

Actually, if you are shopping for an M1 from somewhere other than CMP, it is good to take that along and gauge it.

It's intended for an M1 Garand, but...

No reason one couldn't use it for any .308" rifle with an exposed muzzle, like a 1903 Springfield, U.S. 1917 Enfield, and so forth. Nice find for a garage sale item!
