I've also been looking for a small semi-auto pistol for CCW instead of my 5 shot revolver. LGS has an indoor range and I tried out a Ruger LC9 that they use in their concealed carry classes. Loved the feel of the pistol and it wasn't much on recoil, actually pleasant to shoot, however the trigger is atrocious. Long, long pull and I kept pinching the tip of my trigger finger between the trigger and the trigger guard. Had to just put the tip of my finger on the trigger to keep from being pinched. Not something easy to remember in a panic situation.
Long story to say you should locate a LGS that rents pistols to shoot and try them out. I was allowed to dry fire the pistol in the display case but I didn't get the pinch that way, only when I shot it. Once you have bought it, it's yours and you will lose money if you decide to trade for something else that suits you. What feels good in my hand may feel like crap in yours. Also asking others what they prefer is like asking what type of woman they like, blonde, brunette, redhead, tall, short, etc, you will get all kinds of different answers.
Don't get into such a hurry, it will only disappoint you if you choose poorly.
