What is your ideal hunting rifle!

Out in the open? Something heavier, varmint profile barrel 20-24" inches with a larger scope, chambered in something fast, from .22-250 to 7stw, (.243, 6 creed, 6.5 prc/leopard, .264 win mag, .270wsm, 7 rm, and stw) suppressed where legal, with a swagger bipod, either a big horn or savage action cuz I seem to hate barrel life, adjustable stock. In closer confines? R1 .270wsm cranking something heavy and nasty with a 2-7 or 3.5-10 power would get the pick, followed quickly by a .375 ruger same scope, and crf.

I haven't hunted since I moved to Texas over 20 years ago.
If I did I'd probably use my old .270 Savage 110 in a Boyd stock and topped with a Nikon Buckmaster.
It suits me.
The 110 Savage .30-06, low-comb, was my first centerfire rifle, when about 15yrs. old (1959-ish). It kicked the heck out of me and the low-comb wasn't kind either, so I got a semi-inletted Bishop stock blank and literally "carved" and rasped a new one that fit me like a glove. Recoil effect was very good and I didn't even have a recoil pad. I only shot one deer with it, but got lots of woodchucks and a few crows.

Yes, the locking bolt. I will never return to another hunting rifle without it. How is not having your bolt stay closed acceptable?

Perhaps those of us pushing through Rocky Mountain brush are a minor consideration compared to tree stand hunters.
Hunt with a Nagant or Arisaka. They're bolts don't move when you want them to. ;)
While it would be annoying to have the bolt come open, I've never had this happen to me. I've spent a lot of time hunting brush and swamps. Most of the time my rifle is in my hands.

Ideal. Hmmm. I like bolts to death. Mauser, Savage are the best for me. I have a Tikka, and am amazed how smooth the factory bolt is. I am great with iron sights but I want a scope from 3 or 4 power up to 12x.
I really like a nice wood stock, but the worry free care and camo of synthetic has it's attractions. If the trigger is anything over 3 pounds is not acceptable, closer to 1.5 pounds is better. So I match the rifle to the purpose. .243. .308,.7mm Mag,.458WM. Oh yeah, I build flintlocks too, so I am all over the place.
