What is your preferred, most useful gun?

Keltec SUB2000 in GLOCK19 (9mm)

I can carry a pistol, and do most days (either a Officers Model ACP or a Fullsize 1911, most often, followed by a Kahr PM9 and a Glock17).

I own a pair of ARs, a . 308 bolt rifle as well- and the SUB2k gets the least actual use- I have to remind myself to take it out at the range once and a while.

But, it's almost as concealable as a pistol.
it's effective out to 100 yards
It's cheap to shoot.
it uses common mags.
It'll take small game just fine, and deal effectively with goblins should the need arise.
It's legal (with 10 round mags), everywhere I travel, even NYS, and it fits in a locked hard side briefcase.

Large game taker, home defense gun...

My pick would be the only gun I own to date - a Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 rifle in .30 caliber 7.62.54R cartridge. I could even take fowl with it, though not 'on the wing', and smaller game like rabbits, possum and woodchucks. But to be a bit more realistic, I would choose a reliable 12 gauge shotgun where I could use both shot and slug. I primarily bought the Mosin because it was so cheap at $89.95. I do love my Mosin-Nagant rifle though, the longer I own it and shoot it, the more it grows on me. ;)

Preferred and most useful are two different things for me.

The most useful would be a shotgun since you can hunt a wide range of game as well as use it effectively for defense. Ideally, one with a variety of readily exchanged barrels.

My preferred is a Lightweight Hi Power (admittedly limited in practicality compared to the shotgun).

<---- Yep I live in TX so just about anything goes except for open carry...

If it came down to it. (After all this is a basically a fantasy thread) A compact 9mm, as you picked, would be a lot harder to put meat on the table with. A rifle is more useful than a handgun IMO. You can hunt effectively, plink, HD/SD, you just cannot CCW easily (LOL).

I would pick the 336 in 30-30 for the above reasons.

It's a matter of priorities, is all. Ours are different. I am more concerned with self defense. I don't feed myself and my family with what I hunt.

I don't know about you, but I think that my chances of needing to defend myself from a lethal force attack inside my own home are less than they are outside of my home...so I want my defensive firearm to be able to go with me when leave. Of course, the handgun still works inside of my home anyway. That way it covers HD, SD, "CCW"...the whole shebang.

I really like having this conversation in the store. When somebody answers with a rifle or shotgun they usually quote effectiveness against people vs a handgun. I then ask them where that rifle/shotgun is...oh, it's at home. A :scrutiny: look at that moment generally has a nice effect. :D

It has to be my BCM AR-15.

Extremely accurate, can hunt with it in a pinch (I'd use bigger calibers though for deer), can sometimes afford to plink with it, rugged, reliable, light. Just a great all around carbine.

As much as I like my other guns, and find every one of them useful, if I could have only 1 gun to serve all purposes, it would have to be my Mossberg 500A 12ga pump. 6's or 7 1/2's for squirrel, rabbit and birds, 4's for turkeys, 00 buckshot or slugs for hogs, deer, and intruders.

To those saying a long gun is their most useful firearm... Do you carry now? If so, do you plan on replacing your carry gun with that long gun? How do you plan on carrying it? For a Rule-Of-Law situation, I think choosing a long gun over a handgun for your ONLY gun is, well... silly. I can bring a handgun anywhere, and if I did find myself in a survival scenario, I would have no problem trying to take game or defending myself with a handgun chambered for any popular service caliber.

Of course this is just my opinion, and you know how that goes.

Great minds think alike.

Now I just need to do the "two is one, one is none" thing and get a second one.

I do have a Glock 19, though, so that mostly counts.

Same here. I'm looking for a Gen 4 G33 myself, but it'd get a 9mm conversion barrel 90% of the time. I like having multiples. Heck, they're small enough to carry both with reasonable comfort lol.

Well my most used firearm is a H&R single shot 12 ga. shotgun. My wife and daughter love it's simple break open action and lighter weight. It handles everything from birdshot to slugs. It stands on duty by the front door with a ammo sleeve fill with 5 rounds on the buttstock.

So I guess my choice is this H&R.

Remington 870 pump. Ive killed tons of game with it, shoot sporting clays for fun with it, and it will handle home defense quite well too.

Stoeger Uplander in 12 ga. You can shoot anything from deer to pheasants to skeets with that thing. It'll handle just about any load you throw at it. And you could also use it for HD.
Also is great for Cowboy Action Shooting

Think as if you could only have one gun the rest of your life. What do you see as the most useful gun that you could have with you? I'm still pretty young and I haven't had a lot of exposure to a large variety of guns, so I haven't formed an opinion on this yet.
It depends on the scenario. For a non-SHTF type situation it would have to be either my 92 or 1911 as I can not be without CCW. In a SHTF scenario, however, I would choose my 12g because it has a long-distance capability with slugs, SD/HD with buckshot, I can take game with it and, perhaps most importantly, I have a lot of corresponding ammo on hand.

In essence, a handgun for everyday use and some-kind of long-gun for a "bad" day.

There is no distinction between SHTF and not. This is ONE GUN. Period. For the rest of your life. That's it. One gun. Not "one gun in this scenario...now a different gun in that scenario"

If your non-SHTF choice is a handgun then your answer to the OP should be that handgun.

Hey Warp,

Chill--you answer how you like and I will do likewise.

H&R break-open single shot rifle, with a .22LR brrl and a .410 full choke brrl...
kills many types of pesky critters around the home acres, even the kids love it

For carrying, I'd say my .38 special revolver, basic, moderately priced, reliable, it never jams, not a big gun, can fit in the glove compartment, easily concealable, ammo moderately priced, good reputation, cops used .38 specials for decades.

USEFUL is vague at best. I carry a pocket pistol every day but so far I've not had to use it, I only carry my shotgun during hunting seasons but I've used it ( for its intended purpose)more than any other gun I own. So my choice would have to be a compromise and that would be my Blackhawk .45acp/.45C it would allow some use as a SD CC gun but also allow me to legally hunt deer.

Walther P99AS in .40S&W: Concealable, accurate, safe to carry, tons of ammo, and in a pinch I hunt with it.
