Hi I was wondering if any of you have a set routine that you follow at the range?? I sort of have a routine .I like shooting handguns so I warm up with my Mark-2 22LR ,I usually fire a Half a brick and concentrate on my hold ,trigger pull ,stance and sight picture. Then I move up to the flavor of the week ,which would be a Centerfire pistol new or old and fire between 100-200 rounds thru that. But usually in between th 15Min firing cycles a little socializing with the other shooters at the range kind of a show and tell . So do you have a set routine when you go to the Range??:)

We (my brother, cousin and girlfriend) typically do a box or two of clay pigeons on the trap range and then move down to the pistol/rifle range (if 50 yards can be called a rifle range) and we shoot until we either run out of ammo or someone has to go home. Typically I try to socialize, but when my cousin is there I dont have much of a chance (former Army, excellent instructor) as he's usually helping my girlfriend or I with our handgun shooting.

A very gunny older gentleman (most here would recognize his name) taught me this: At the pistol range, always shoot a few Mozambique's "cold" before moving to other exercises. On a timer, this really hammers home the concept of consistency from visit to visit.

Yeah, I sorta have a routine. I usually bring 2 guns...a 22lr (revo or pistol) and my current house gun. I usually shoot my house gun 1st...usually 100-300 rounds depending on how the night is goins & how many friends I've gone w/. Then I'll shoot my 22 - usually a bulk pack of 550 from Walmart. During which time, the "can you hit this logo from this business card?" stuff starts.
Session ends w/ sodas, sometimes a meal & a lot of complaining on how poorly we shoot :D

I usually bring two rifles and a pistol.

I usually put up a boatload of targets out there at various ranges then start with one of the rifles. After it heats up, I switch to the second. After that one heats up, I drill with the pistol a while, then reload mags and start over.

My range routine is...

Put up target, load, shoot, reload, shoot, pick up brass, put up new target, load, shoot, reload, shoot, pickup brass. Repeat as long as ammo hold out. Then buy more ammo on the way home and pick up a six pack to finish out the day.....chris3

my routine is:
unload all gear from vehicle.
stop to pick up the items dropped.
curse myself for forgetting that it would have been easier to use one of the wheelbarrows the range keeps for people with lots of stuff.
get gear to the lane and set up target. unload misc items (targets, ammo, mags, etc).
wonder out loud "wheres my stapler?" or, if i remembered the stapler "wheres the staples?"
finally get set up to shoot, start out with the 9mm.
take a few shots at 7 yards. curse the wind (even if the air has been completely still) and the fog (even though its bright blue skies) because the target is untouched.
reload, shoot again. this time blame the aftershocks from the '64 earthquake for messing up my shots. this time 2 holes appeared in the 7 ring.
must be time for the range to be called cold. walk to target, nonchalantly punch a few holes in targets 10 ring with pen, congratulate self for being such a marksman.
repeat until out of ammo.
make mental note that next time i'll start by shooting from a bench rest and make an impressive group before peppering the area all around the target with my shots. that way i can at least pretend all the shots taken from a weaver stance went through the same holes from the first string at the bench rest.

I start with the smallest handgun caliber and move up. And then move to long rifles/shotguns. If I know what my range buddies are bringing, I'll try to "match", like having a "revolver day" or "shotgun day".

I try to get phone numbers :D

Seriously though, my indoor range visits I just shoot whatever I have. AOL CDs at 50 feet, tennis balls 21-50 feet, mozambiques 25-33 feet, one hand drills, etc.

I go to the range, shoot, pick up anything that remotely looks like brass, go home, sort & tumble brass and clean guns (not necessarily in that order), plan next trip.

My routine is almost identical to yours, except slightly fewer rounds with the .22, and sometimes there's more than one flavor of the week.

My usual ritual....

1a) Call friends ( on cell or land line ),
1b) Drive to the "Range" ie ( the Oregon National Dunes ),
2) Find a hard patch of Earth to park on,
3a) Get out of truck ( Toyota ),
3b) BS with friend(s),
4) Insert earplugs & don Oakleys,
5a) Grab guns ( plus ammo,mags,and targets),
5b) Put on my Tactical gear,
6a) Check my surroundings,
6b) BS with friend(s) and strangers,
7) Check six,
8a) Set up targets,
8b) BS with friend(s),
9) Check six,
10a) Shoot guns ( both mine as well as those of my Home-boys),
10b) BS with friend(s),
11) Pick up spent brass and assorted hole-ridden items,
12) Put guns back in truck,
12b) BS with friend(s),
13) Drive home ( while BSin' with friends on CB ),
14) End the day by cleaning my various dirty guns...

Your results may vary....:neener: :D

I go to the safe, open it, grab normally a turk mauser and about 20rds of ammo, my ear muffs, and glasses. Then I head out the door, walk about 50yds and start by shooting at steel targets, normally at 250yds, sometimes 300, and if I really want to work at it with those ol iron sights 375(the farthest I can shoot on the range here). I shoot almost totally prone, standing, and sitting, only time I work a gun off the bench is when it is sighting in and grouping time.

I normally do it almost every day of the week, just scatter in some different guns on occasion. The turk is just cheap to shoot and keeps your recoil tolerance up. Somedays i'll shoot a .22 at crazy ranges, others days run some slugs through with the house gun. Work on some of my bolt guns from time to time. About the only gun I don't shoot at the range is a Browning .280 that I carry daily and use to shoot hogs and coyotes and such with all the time.

Every gun owner has to in time get a place with a safe spot to put a range. My real estate agent was told..."It has to be over ten acres so I can shoot and not have any neighbors close on a couple sides." I have a 180acres on the west side and another 180 on the north, my 10.81 has a range that runs diagnallyacross the place and a 10' berm in the back with 2 smaller berms staggered in front of it, so I have a backstop at 100yds, 200yds, and the big one at 300yds, or I can move back a little from the 300yd line and get another 75yds.

The only thing it lacks is a huge tall bluff face so I could try clays with a rifle like Henry Bowman.:D

Open door, step onto deck, look up for weather check, shoot guns, sit at deck table, double check guns are unloaded, pop a beer, clean guns, pop second beer, admire clean guns.:)

indoor .45 acp practice

I try to get all the gear ready the night before,
when I get to the range I fire the most accurate strings I am able
2 handed unsupported, strong hand unsupported, weak hand unsupported, at 7 yards.
move to 25 yards shoot for groups 2 handed unsupported.
Move targets to 7 yards do double taps, high speed with mag changes (high speed for me anyway).
And finish off the range session with a few more mags of precise groups 2 handed unsupported.
pick up brass and curse .40 S&W shooters:cuss:
Drool over guns in shop wash hands and arms thoroughly
and go home to clean and reload.
I always try to take a Bud, or the Wife or my oldest Daughter.
