What kind of AR did you build (can you build) for $500?

The recent threads about what AR to get for $1,200 and Olympic budget AR's got me thinking about this...

What kind of an AR can you build, or did you build, for around $500 total?

Use the best parts you can find, new or used, and give me your best advice about where corners can be cut. I'm not expecting to come out with a new total Mil-spec rifle that would rival a Colt... just seeing what kind of a serviceable rifle you can assemble for that budget.

eh, you could, but why would you want to? The whole point IMHO of building your own rifle is picking out quality parts. Unfortunately that doesn't always come cheap.

What got me thinking of this was a write-up I read about this guy who built a rifle out of the parts he had on hand.
And if S&W can build an M&P Sport and sell it not much more than that new, maybe I can do better than that.
So instead of "why would you?" I'd say "why not?"

Because even if you could find a way to do it (doubtful) it would probably be made of piece of crap parts.

Like I said, I AM NOT trying to build a mil-spec rife... just a shooter.
So if no one can do it... then this thread should just take a dirt nap from a lack of responses. That's what I'm aiming for here.
No peeing contests, no smacking me with "the chart" and telling me what a fool I am for thinking about this.
Just useful experience and advice or nothing at all.

Thanks gents. Appreciate it.
