I'm looking into making a custom handgaurd for my Century Arms HK-91 clone. The M-14 had fiberglass stocks and handgaurds so I figure why not the '91?

I'm just not sure what type of resin to use to hold up to the temperatures. Will the normal stuff used for auto body work be OK or would I want to use something different?

Don't know about the bodyshop stuff, probably they are more concerned with being able to sand and finish than heat resistance.
I would think a phenolic resin would be tops as far as heat resistance. Have you checked the HK forum to see if somebody has the 91 hand guards available, if they fit it might be lot less sweat and tears than rolling your own.

Edarnold, Thanks for the resin recommendation. Yeah, could get a handgaurd, heck I already have one of the wide green ones, but where's the fun in that This is only partly about having another compliance part and mostly about me liking to tinker with stuff.

I actually have this great plan to integrate a flashlight, or at least rail mounting points, and some battery storage into it.

Regular fiber glass resin will work very well for what you want.

Try this, put your hand on a dark colored Corvette on a hot sunny day.
