I was sitting at home today bored and started watching the TV and saw a program on the secret service. I saw a brief video of the attempted assassination of then president Ronald Reagan. It looked like some of the agents were carrying UZI's. My question is this, Does anyone know what kind of handguns and submachine guns they carry now? Thanks

Sean

When the Pres. came here, Colt M4's were what I saw. Most had barrels in the 10.5" range (that's what they looked like from 10 yards or so). Pistols were Sigs and Glocks.

The issue handgun for the USSS is the SIG P229. I don't how much (if any) leeway they have.

Straight from their website:
Secret Service agents and officers carry the Sig Sauer P229, 357 caliber pistol. They also are trained on the Remington Model 870 shotgun, the Uzi submachine gun, and the MP5 automatic weapon.
Nothing about Glocks. Nothing about FNs. (And nothing so secret about Glocks and FNs, they wouldn't list them.) :)

Regardless of what the web site says, I was within 10 yards of POTUS himself and his security detail most definately had SBR M4's.

Those pictures with Reagan are almost 25 years old now. They might have moved up a bit. Here's one from that time period:

Interesting, they definately were not local SWAT, and they were not DPS SWAT, who were they? The closest FBI or US Marshal would be around 80 miles, so that could be a possibility.
Where in NM are you located Sam, this was during his Hobbs stop?

Various agencies contribute members to the protection pool. USSS spearheads the effort.

What 19112XS said. The Air Force explosive ordnance disposal team that I supported at my last job would always have a team off somewhere on scratch and sniff detail for the POTUS and the like. We were at Pope AFB in NC, but they would go all over.

The USSS has been seen using the FN P90 on occasion. Probably for its low incidence of overpenetration and compactness of the weapon.

My best friend is in the uniformed division of the SS and he said they carry 357 sigs.and 380 sig as a back up if they want...not sure of the models(he's not really a gun guy, although he was the best shot in his class at the academy...)
as a side note he said there a certain places that he MUST carry 24/7...like DC ,VA and MD,just in case he's called in...we should all have that problem...

Crickey! Do they have to be dressed up like that all the time? I'd go insane putting all that gear on every day just waiting around for someone to jump the fence.

Yep. Some guy jumped the fence at the White House last year and they took him down.
I'm familiar with the incident, but that does not necessarily make them USSS. It is equally possible they were of another organization seconded to the White House for security.

Not to beat a dead horse, but on page 141 of Guns and Ammo "Combat Tactics" summer 2005 issue (basicaly a 162 page ad for Surefire): "...the SS has adopted the P90 to replace it's aging Uzi 9mm subguns".

They are uniformed division. It would be highly unlikely to have other agencies working at the White House in such a role. As I understand it, USSS uniformed division has the perimeter at the White House. Obviously there are agents with the president in the White House. USSS uniformed officers also serve as counter-snipers when away from the White House. On the road- the agents use locals, state, plus augmentation agents from current and former Treasury agencies.

A friend of mine is former USSS uniformed division. I also work with several USSS agents. Being a Stargate SG-1 fan (and a P-90 fan) I had to ask them about the P-90s. :D
